Job Summary
The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at Drexel University College of Medicine announces the opening of tenure-track faculty positions. Appointment rank is open and dependent on qualifications of the applicants and strength of their research programs. Candidates should demonstrate superior achievements in research and education/mentoring commensurate to their academic level, an appropriate background in university level education, and ability to work with diverse groups in a highly collegial manner. Applicants with research interests and expertise that strengthen and complement those of the existing faculty will be considered. Within the department, opportunities for interdisciplinary research exist in the general areas of: neuroimmunology, neuroinflammation and neurological disorders; cancer biology and therapeutics; cardiovascular disease; pain, and substance abuse. Additionally, in the spirit of translational and collaborative research, interactions with clinicians and investigators from other departments or colleges are available and highly encouraged. The department is one of the four basic science departments of the College of Medicine and actively participates in the education and training of both graduate and medical students. The Pharmacology and Physiology graduate program offers courses leading to the MS and the PhD. The department also houses a unique MS degree program in Drug Discovery and Development, which attracts students with diverse backgrounds and contributes to an intellectually stimulating environment. Faculty research programs within the department are funded by a variety of federal agencies, including NIH, DoD, AHA, and other funding agencies. Drexel University investigators are supported by a vibrant scientific community and state of the art core laboratories, including a new genomic and bioinformatics facility – among others.
Essential Functions
Essential functions for applicants at the rank of Associate Professor include multiple activities that sustain the educational and research missions of the department and its role within the College of Medicine and Drexel University. Initially for a new faculty, it is estimated that approximately 90% of this effort goes towards research-related activities and 10% toward education/service. Some examples of these essential functions are listed below.
- Support the department’s research mission by maintaining a vibrant and productive research program, which attracts competitive trainees and extramural funding
- Promote the health and success of the department by supporting a collegial environment and assisting the chair and senior faculty with the mentoring of junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows
- Mentor graduate and medical students and supervise their research activities towards their Master and/or PhD degree; this includes both active technical training in the lab (i.e. as the student’s primary mentor) and other group activities (e.g. seminar, steering/thesis committees, workshops, conferences, lectures, internal presentations et al).
- Participate to the education of Medical and Graduate students through involvement with the Pharmacology and Physiology Courses that are part of the medical or graduate school curriculum (and other programs - not essential). These may include lecturing, simulations, small groups teaching, and/ or directing/co-directing entire courses.
- Partake in various types of institutional service as needed and requested by the chair (e.g. department representation in standing departmental and university committees or any task force).
- Expand the department/school national or international footprint by attending and/or presenting at international conferences and establishing collaborations with other peers.
- Contribute to the scholarly activity of the department and its national/international ranking by maintaining a high level of scientific productivity and innovation (in both research and education).
- Engage in translational research efforts and multidisciplinary collaborations with other Drexel academic units and enhance opportunity for MPIs competitive projects.
- PhD or Doctorate, Life Sciences Discipline (eg. Pharmacology/Physiology/Immunology)
- Minimum of 5 years Previous Post-Doctoral Training
