Job Description:

OFFICIAL TITLE: Staff Assistant, Academic Advisor

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Assistant Dean for Academic Success

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Student Work Study Personnel

General Statement of Duties: Provide walk-in advising support to undergraduate students across all disciplines. Serve as the main contact for students who are considering a withdrawal or leave of absence from the University. This person must have the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals and to be perceptive and understanding of student concerns. Job requires extreme sensitivity and appropriate handling of confidential information and a professional approach to all responsibilities as outlined below.

(E) Serve as a walk-in advisor to undergraduate students across all disciplines to answer general questions related to program and University requirements.
(E) Meet with all incoming transfer students and evaluate transfer credit as it relates to general education and major requirements. Identify a first semester schedule for this population in consultation with the academic department.
(E) Counsel students considering withdrawals or leaves of absence and assist them in filling out any necessary paperwork.
(E) Communicate with Faculty as program liaisons on topics of transfer courses and students on academic probation.
(E) Assist with the development and implementation of advising materials, student workshops, and faculty/advisor programs.
(E) Serve as an undeclared advisor.
(E) Provide night and weekend coverage.
(E) Assist with orientation programs, Open Houses, Congratulations Day, First-Year Student Registration Programs, and Transfer Advising.
(E) Work collaboratively with departments across campus including academic and student support services. Provide referrals when necessary and advocate for students success when needed.
(E) Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising all student staff and non-professional staff in the Academic Success Center.
(E) Maintain working knowledge of computer systems including Image Now, Datatel, Accuplacer, Transfer Equivalency System (TES).
(E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
(E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.
Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, listening, and counseling skills.
  • Ability to interact with a very diverse group of faculty, students, staff, and university personnel.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to successfully pass a thorough background and CORI check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a related field.
