Job Summary

The Department of Biology, Drexel University in Philadelphia, is seeking to hire a full-time Assistant Director of Teaching Laboratories. Individuals will assist in the development and delivery of our Bio 219 Techniques in Molecular Biology lab course. This course is a writing intensive course within our core curriculum that teaches foundational techniques in molecular biology. Successful applicants will teach and oversee multiple sections of the Bio 219 labs and recitations throughout the academic year.

The position will be responsible for direct supervision and evaluation of students in the laboratory and recitations and will work with faculty to plan and implement teaching labs and assist in educational assessment. As a writing intensive course, the position will be responsible for working with students to introduce them to the writing conventions and practices of scientific writing. As part of a larger lab project, the assistant director will provide students’ feedback throughout the writing process to assess their knowledge of the subject matter and their ability to effectively communicate results to others. This position will work closely with the Director of Teaching Laboratory Services and will report to the Assistant Department Head.

Essential Functions
  • Work with a multi-person team involved in the development and delivery of our undergraduate Techniques in Molecular Biology laboratories.
  • Work with prep staff in the planning and preparation of undergraduate molecular labs, including screening of the lab materials and protocols.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Department Head and the Director of Teaching Services to develop and deliver the laboratory content, as well as develop associated course rubrics and resources aimed at helping students develop their scientific writing skills.
  • The position will also be involved in academic functions such as developing pre-labs, grading, assessing student writing and tutoring students.
  • Other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Biological Science or related field
  • At least 2 years of laboratory experience in research, clinical, or educational lab environment
  • Strong communication and writing skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree preferred, not required
  • Teaching experience preferred, not required
