Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship

Southwestern University invites applications for the position of Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (CTLS).  This is a 12-month, full-time staff position and is eligible for the University’s benefit programs.  Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty, the individual in this position encourages, promotes, and supports the pursuit of excellence in teaching, learning and scholarship within Southwestern University’s distinctive undergraduate liberal arts and sciences setting.  Candidates with a strong commitment to enhancing diversity in academia are preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Provide dynamic leadership in support of the growth of Southwestern faculty as outstanding teacher-scholars
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and implement programs, including New Faculty Orientation, faculty reading and writing groups, diversity training for faculty search committees, course design workshops, and teacher-scholar lunches, as well as new programs, that address the needs of Southwestern faculty in the areas of teaching, learning, and scholarship
• Create additional opportunities to explore the integration of scholarship and teaching that will further enrich the education of Southwestern students
• Work closely and collaboratively with the Dean of the Faculty to effectively communicate both general and specific faculty needs and concerns
• Develop an assessment and evaluation plan and process to ensure programs are effective and align with institutional goals
• Supervise and collaborate with the University’s Instructional Technologist
• Lead the hiring and training process for two new positions: Diversity and Inclusion Pedagogy Specialist and Faculty Grants and Sponsored Programs Coordinator
• Serve on University governance committees and working groups that inform and support the work of the CTLS

Qualifications:

• PhD in an academic discipline represented within the liberal arts and sciences
• At least three years of proven successful administrative experience within a center for teaching and learning (or similar environment), preferably at a liberal arts and sciences university/college
• At least five years of experience teaching at the collegiate level, preferably within the liberal arts and sciences environment
• Demonstrated engagement in the faculty development field as well as an understanding of that landscape within higher education and preferably within the liberal arts and sciences
• Understanding of the variety of pedagogical methodologies and the diversity of pedagogical needs of liberal arts and sciences students
• Knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education teaching and learning
• Demonstrated record of scholarship and publishing
• Demonstrated leadership, planning, and change management skills
• Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies and diverse groups of individuals;
• Excellent interpersonal skills, discretion, and judgment
• Experience with pedagogical publication, the assessment of pedagogical work and interdisciplinary teaching and research is preferred
• Vision, passion, and energy for the pursuit of excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarship
