The Clinical Immunology Department is seeking aResearch Specialist II who will coordinate and oversee the operation of the laboratory and will be expected to function independently in both administrative and research capacities. This individual will assist the principal investigator in organization of the laboratory, and will routinely communicate with lab members regarding administrative issues.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Research Specialist II will be reporting to two faculty sharing a common laboratory and using a wide variety of similar techniques. For example, they will use sterile tissue culture technique to maintain cell lines and performs cell line characterization as needed.
  • The Specialist will need experience in venipuncture as part of work with human subjects’ studies and the maintenance of simple IRB-prescribed blood drawing protocols. The Specialist will need experience with various laboratory procedures (that will be learned) that include, for example, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, PCR and ELISA-based assays and other assays related to a medical research laboratory.
  • The Specialist will be responsible for maintaining and expanding a laboratory animal population, almost exclusively mice. This will also involve the injection of cells into mice, and the subsequent removal and dissection of tissues and blood and measuring core body temperature.
  • The Specialist should be familiar with PC and Macintosh computers and standard computer software, including the Microsoft Office package and Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop. They will maintain the laboratory computers and printers.
  • Will be responsible for laboratory administration. Experience with the Hopkins SAP Portal system is preferred and they will order from the JHU CORE store, JHU Supply Store, and external vendors. This will require monitoring inventory levels of materials and supplies, as well as communication with and knowledge of relevant vendors. In addition, they will process invoices for services received. Proper handling and organization of paperwork is required to ensure that laboratory spending is constrained to budgetary limits.
  • Will be responsible for the composition of standard laboratory protocols, including those for cell line maintenance and animal care and use.
  • May be responsible for training staff and fellows, training researchers from collaborating laboratories. They will maintain their Hopkins internal certifications in human subject related issues (e.g., venipuncture) and animal use.
  • Monitor equipment performance and maintenance, and be responsible for scheduling repairs and renewing service contracts when necessary. The complexity level involved with managing one piece of equipment is high.
  • Duties include managing and developing an appropriate invoicing and billing process related to their use.
  • Train new users, and assist with usage when needed.
  • Will be responsible for scheduling preventative maintenance and keeping the systems in working order, as well as addressing and troubleshooting any problems.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Requires aBachelor's degree in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, engineering, and or other related discipline. An advanced degree is helpful.
  • Requires aminimum of two years in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques, coupled with knowledge of biological sciences, molecular biology, or chemistry.Prefer a minimum of three or more years.
  • A Master's degree with related graduate-level research may substitute for experience in the extend permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Tissue culture (animal and human), experience with standard molecular biology techniques, experience with animal models, relevant computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Office and Hopkins SAP Portal.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
