Job Description

Through Educational Outreach and Student Services, this position works with ASU students, faculty, and staff to ensure access to educational programs and services for students with disabilities.

 

Salary Range

$48,000 per year

Essential Duties

  • Works collaboratively with students, faculty, employees and other stakeholders across campuses to identify opportunities, and to develop and implement appropriate measures to further improve the accessibility of the learning environments through the application of universal design principles (adaptive technology, curriculum design, use of technology in the classroom, etc.).
  • Participates in formalized departmental environmental access work teams to provide access to the various curricular, electronic, physical and co-curricular environments across all campuses to ensure compliance with established university policies, procedures and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Provides formal/informal training/presentations throughout the University, across campuses and to a variety of external communities to increase awareness and understanding of universal design concepts and other disability-related topics and promote sensitivity and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities.
  • Reviews disability documentation to determine eligibility for services and/or substantiate requests for reasonable accommodations for students.
  • Assesses disabled students' interaction with learning environment; develops integrated plan to provide reasonable accommodation to ensure equitable opportunities.
  • Provides information, referral and support to students with disabilities by applying student development principles and concepts which support university, divisional and departmental missions.
  • Documents and maintains current and accurate case records/notes of appropriate information in both electronic and hard files; maintains strict confidentiality of all communications, in compliance with applicable federal laws.
  • Conducts ongoing and regular reviews of all case files to ensure progress towards established objectives and outcomes.
  • Identifies, develops and maintains community partnerships that further the mission and vision of Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services and increase capacity of agencies/organization to better work with individuals with disabilities.
  • Actively participates in local and statewide committees and initiatives to facilitate transition of disabled students into higher education.
  • Plans, conducts, reports and/or participates in disability and higher education research as recommended and/or approved by Student Accessibility management.
  • Actively participates in a variety of professional development activities through presentations, publications and attendance at conferences and/or related activities.
  • Develops and teaches courses in support of the University, divisional and departmental missions as recommended and/or approved by DRC management.
  • Assists in development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of standards, programs and procedures for the delivery of quality and effective services.
  • Stays abreast of legislation, national, state and local issues affecting access for disabled individuals; identifies opportunities to improve and/or increase program scope and impact.
  • Works collaboratively with other related program/service areas throughout the University to coordinate efforts, identify areas for improvement and improve overall quality of access to educational programs, services and facilities.
  • Acts as liaison to the college/department by serving on various department committees, task forces and networks to ensure needs of disabled student population are appropriately addressed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Rehabilition Counseling, Counseling, Educational Psychology or related field AND two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a closely related position; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Higher Education.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a Higher Education Setting.
  • Experience working with students taking in person and online courses.
  • Experience coordinating services for students.
  • Experience providing one on one support for students.
  • Experience in reviewing disability documentation.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining meaningful partnerships/relationships.
  • Experience working with Assistive Technology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, policies, regulations and standards (e.g. Section 504 and the ADAA).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of universal design principles and techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU Sun Devil Way and Educational Outreach and Student Services Goals.

 

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled professional office setting under the following conditions:
  • Work performed is subject to extended periods of sitting and standing and may be required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work performed is subject to extended periods using standard office equipment such as a computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse) inputting, reviewing and retrieving information; extended periods of viewing a monitor or screen; and using printer, fax, calculator, copier, and telephone.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing in English through email, print, phone, and web media with students, staff, faculty, and members of the public who interact with the Dean of Students Office.
  • Use independent judgment and critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze data.
  • Professionally represent department/program.
  • Work collaboratively across various departments within the University as well as with diverse populations and groups.
  • Walk moderate distances across campus for meetings or events, which may include times of inclement weather.
  • Work at and with all four campus locations.

The Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services provides services to qualified students with disabilities on all ASU campuses.

 

Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) is committed to enrolling all qualified students at Arizona State University and assisting them in their academic success. EOSS provides a broad range of services and support to students and prospective students ranging from outreach efforts with K-12 schools, orientation programs for new freshman, bridge programs to assist the transition to a university environment, and a wide variety of services, programs and activities for enrolled students. EOSS has direct responsibility for multiple departments across four campuses, some of which include the Dean of Students, University Housing, Health Services, Counseling Services, Disability Resources, the Memorial Union, Upward Bound and TRiO programs, Sun Devil Fitness, Student Government, Student Media, Career Services and others. 

 

A Department of Motor Vehicle check also will be conducted. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License upon employment and have an acceptable driving record, which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.
