Position Summary:

This position reports to the Manager, Network and Security, School of Medicine and Public Health. This position seeks an enthusiastic individual with a willingness to learn and the ability to take initiative and produce results, who can assist in delivering quality service and effective Networking and Cybersecurity solutions.

The successful candidate will also contribute to our continued strength in being a place people want to work, by bringing collaboration skills, and encouraging both individual growth and team morale. The SMPH Network and Security Group manages the switches, routers, firewalls and other equipment that comprise the SMPH network and is responsible for ensuring the network is fast, reliable and secure. In addition, the group monitors and scans host on the network to detect potential vulnerabilities and malware. The group also plays a role in regulatory compliance by providing encryption, access control, packet capturing, forensic analysis and incident response. The School of Medicine and Public Health is one of the largest divisions of UW-Madison, employing over 4000 faculty, staff and instructors and conducts over $350 million of research annually. The data communication network in the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health is comprised of approximately 10,000 total nodes located in 16 buildings on-campus as well as another 20 sites off-campus.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Associate degree in computer networking or equivalent experience preferred

Actively working towards degree in networking, cybersecurity, computer science, or related field preferred

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
- Knowledge of or experience working with layer 1 and layer 2 networking protocols
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Preferred:
- 1 or more years' experience working in field of networking
- Experience with next generation firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto)
- Experience with Cisco switch software (e.g., Cisco IOS)
- Experience working in higher education or medical school environment

License or Certificate:

Preferred:
- CCNA, Network+, etc. - or working towards obtaining

Additional Information:

The School of Medicine and Public Health will not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

This position has been identified as a position of trust. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver level background check to be eligible for employment.
