SUMMARY OF PURPOSE:

Responsible for college wide instructional design and support for faculty in the use of academic technology for student learning including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of web-based and instructor-led curricula; proactive consultation with subject matter experts to identify and obtain objectives and content; drafting storyboards and mock-ups, and writing and developing training content; and cross-campus adoption of best-in-class authoring tools, industry standard protocols, and distance learning technologies. Instructional Designers work on multiple projects concurrently and must be able to create project plans and deliver timely results. The employee is expected to work in a multi-cultural diverse working environment.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

This description is intended to indicate the types of duties and responsibilities requested of the employee assigned this title. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that may be required:

  1. Provides pedagogical and instructional design consultation and support services to assist faculty in effectively delivering instruction with particular emphasis on use of technology in hybrid, online, and face-to-face technology-enhanced courses.
  2. Develops instructional strategies and recommends appropriate learning tools to achieve course objectives based on education research and best practices.
  3. Develops and facilitates training sessions and workshops, both on-campus and on-line, based on sound pedagogic principles.
  4. Develops an understanding of college curricular priorities such as student learning outcomes assessment, accessibility, and application of best design practices to implement those priorities.
  5. Investigates and evaluates new pedagogical and technology-mediated learning initiatives including emerging technologies such as mobile learning.
  6. Works in close partnership with faculty to develop and deliver innovative, dynamic and effective design, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and the design of course materials and activities for interactive and engaging learning environments.
  7. Reviews effectiveness of various technologies to support or enhance pedagogy and leverage various technologies in support of instructional goals.
  8. Conducts course reviews and consultations with responsible parties in accordance with Quality Matters standards.
  9. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
  10. Ability to work additional hours, as needed.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Strong technical skills in a variety of multimedia and web applications
  • Knowledge of best practices of Fair Use, Intellectual Property, Quality Matters and Copyright compliance with respect to e-learning
  • Experience with training/communicating concerning ADA compliance for digital learning and WCAG 2.0, including universal design
  • Proven knowledge of rubrics and course assessments
  • Applied experience in instructional design and curriculum development including online learning and instruction, program development, and assessment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and courteously with others
  • Demonstrated skills in project management with ability to prioritize, schedule and meet deadlines for multiple, concurrent design and development projects, from inception to completion, working both independently and within a team with minimal guidance
  • Highly-developed critical thinking skills and strong problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate, research, and develop innovative projects
  • Demonstrated ability facilitating various workshops
  • Working knowledge of media technology, instructional design theory, best practices in online education, learning theory, instruction delivery models, technology tools, technology infrastructure, quality control and metrics
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design or Educational Technology; Master's degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of recent experience with instructional strategies and methodologies, instructional technologies, media selection/design, evaluation, learner analysis, and learning theory within an educational environment. Recent experience with designing and creating online/blended instructional training and/or course materials/content using: learning management systems (preferably Desire2Learn), web-based instructional technologies (e.g. HTML5, CSS, Camtasia), e-learning authoring platforms (e.g. Lectora, Captivate), graphics programs (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator), multimedia technologies, and SCORM compliancy. Proficiency using instructional design tools such as training project plans, design documents, storyboards, prototypes, etc. Experience in effectively developing and assessing online courses using Quality Matters design and evaluation processes. Higher education experience preferred.
