Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, has an immediate opening for a Web Application and Visualization Developer with experience in web application development and visualization tools and modules. This university staff position will work within the CIRES IT team and associated partners to develop and maintain internal business applications, and to research, consult and implement visualization tools to enable our researchers to bring their science to the public and other audiences in fun and engaging ways. These web applications profile cutting-edge research undertaken by CIRES scientists and its researchers.

CIRES seeks candidates who can manage, develop and design websites and applications utilizing PHP, Javascript, MySQL or similar environments. In addition, candidates must be able to research, explore and be able to implement visualization software or modules for researchers. Candidates should be able to work within a team environment, obtain application or web requirements and collaborate with multiple user/research groups to successfully complete project goals. The incumbent will work under the direction of the CIRES Director of IT and Operations. The successful candidate will be familiar with PHP web development and will have written web applications utilizing PHP and/or Javascript.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Prepare, manage and deploy custom software created in-house as part of the development team.
  • Research, document and implement visualization tools based on researcher needs.
  • Create and Review MySQL Schemas including new tables and modification of current tables.
  • Provide both internal and external software documentation with high-code readability.
  • Provide application support to all CIRES members via multiple communication paths.
  • Help Desk, email, phone, in-person support.


What We Can Offer
  • CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $67,000 - $100,000.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES' and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 1+ years of professional, job related experience.


What You Will Need

  • Ability to work well in teams and with end-users.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in working with users to meet UI/UX goals.
  • Proficiency with CSS/SCSS.
  • Experience in end-user training via both in-person and virtual training sessions.
  • Experience in developing code that meets current security standards.
  • Experience in implementing software to accommodate business/research needs.
  • Experience in PHP, MySQL or like development environment.
  • Experience with Git version control.

  • Experience with and interest in visualization software (graphing, GIS, any of WebGL/Direct3D/OpenGL, interactive GUI tools).
  • Experience with current JavaScript Frameworks such as JQuery or AngularJS.
  • Web Development in a LAMP stack.
  • Knowledge in Linux monitoring, troubleshooting and administration.
  • Experience with programming/scripting languages (Perl, Python, Java, Ruby, C).
  • Experience with Datatables JS.
  • Strong interest or experience in Environmental Science.
