Job Title: Media Specialist - Icahn School of Medicine

The Media Specialist will have the responsibility of promoting an understanding and appreciation for the research emerging from the laboratories, departments, and institutes of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The Media Specialist will execute an integrated plan of national and international media outreach targeting multiple scientific, medical, and biotech oriented audiences. By translating highly technical information into clear, concise and engaging stories, this individual will work collaboratively with a team of communications professionals in internal communications, digital and social media enabling content to be disseminated across multiple platforms. The position has a dual report to the Vice President and Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications, and to the Vice President, Media and Public Affairs. By applying the tactics of journalism, science communications, media relations, and public relations this individual will be helping to enhance the Icahn School’s reputation for excellence and the organization’s scientific, institutional, and operational priorities.


Roles & Responsibilities:


  • Execute media outreach strategies to raise the profile of the Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine among key scientifically sophisticated audiences. Produce a consistent flow of news and feature stories that effectively enhance the reputation of Mount Sinai School as a leader in biomedical research.
  • Build relationships with members of the local, national, and international news media, including sharing story ideas with reporters and coordinating internally to respond to requests from reporters.
  • Work with department colleagues and research experts to identify, research, write, edit, package, and assist in the distribution of informative, compelling content.
  • Work with colleagues to identify opportunities that position the faculty as thought leaders, including developing and placing articles for opinion pieces, as well as participating in agenda-setting webinars and podcasts.
  • Stay informed of key achievements and developments in selected scientific areas and work with experts in those areas to develop outreach strategies.
  • Shape scientifically complex information into engaging content that is appropriate for distribution across multiple platforms including print, broadcast, and digital media.
  • Proactively pitch news and feature story ideas to the media and develop long-term projects to promote key people, programs, and initiatives within areas of responsibility.


  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a scientific area relevant to the Mount Sinai School.
  • Five or more years’ experience in media relations or related field. Demonstrated experience communicating about scientific research with scientific and non-science-trained audience.
