University of South Carolina seeks an experienced librarian to serve as Head of Circulation & Visitor Service. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Public Services, this position is responsible for the management of visitor service and circulation functions for a large university library. The University’s main library is in the heart of campus and receives up to 10,000 visitors per day. The library houses general and special collections, a technology lounge, 45 study rooms, 3 classrooms and services offered by university partners including a Student Success Center, Career Center, and the Center for Teaching Excellence. The successful candidate will work closely with other Department Heads and Library Directors to ensure collaboration and coordination of user-centered service delivery across University Libraries. Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees approximately 13 full-time staff and 25 student employees. 
  • Manages day, evening, and weekend shift supervisors responsible for opening and closing the library and staffing the main visitor service desk. 
  • Provides leadership, support and training for a customer service program that fosters a welcoming, inclusive, and responsive environment for a diverse population.
  • Develops policies and workflows for circulation and collection maintenance and manages circulation functions of the Integrated Library Services Platform (Alma, ExLibris).
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements policies for use of the library by students, faculty, and guests, including the registration of visitors not affiliated with the University.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure building and responding to complex visitor issues.  

This position is an essential personnel position within University Libraries. This is a tenure-track faculty position. 

Required Education & Experience:
  • Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science or in another professionally appropriate discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience in circulation or access services.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public service, circulation, collection maintenance, and technical infrastructure required for access and delivery of content. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Alma ILSP from ExLibris. 
  • Management experience in an institution of higher education.
  • Experience managing customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent collaborative and team building skills.
