Job Summary

The Research Associate and Program Coordinator (RAPC) supports Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Analytics (IESA) in advancing program planning, assessment, accreditation, institutional research, academic scheduling, and various research studies. Working independently and collaboratively, the RAPC organizes short and long-range complex projects and determines the most effective approach for completing assigned duties as well as evaluating the significance of ongoing program operations of the unit for its efficacy. This role will serve as a key member of the IESA team to promote student success through partnering with faculty and staff to develop, deliver, and continuously improve how IESA is able to serve Academic Affairs and the university at-large.

The RAPC will work in partnership with all areas in IESA along with several committees and groups such as the Program Planning Committee, Accreditation Review Committee, Joint Enrollment Management Committee, Data Governance Committee, and Academic Senate as well as engage in assessment and academic scheduling activities to support the development, implementation, or review of policies and practices. The RAPC in conjunction with Institutional Research will help support the data and analytical needs in enrollment planning, course enrollment, assigned research projects and studies as well as help develop program and data governance guidelines and practices. The position is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and usability of information delivered to stakeholders including evaluative reports to inform decision-making. The incumbent must be able to use effective communication and listening skills and ability to make decisions that aligns with SJSU policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary staff liaison that supports the administrative activities of program planning, assessment, academic scheduling, and accreditation.
  • Communicates with deans, associate deans, department/chairs, and other leadership and staff regarding all the program planning components.
  • Assists with the development, maintenance, and revision of program planning and assessment materials including policies and procedures, templates and forms, training/orientation resources, and annual reports.
  • Maintains up-to-date program records files and websites for program planning, assessment, and accreditation including the main IESA website.
  • Provides support in assessment activities (e.g., administrative user in Nuventive assessment software, assessment calendar, communications, etc.).
  • Provides support and coordination related to WSCUC accreditation needs, such as the Accreditation Review Committee and information in the annual report related to programs and degrees. Supports institutional reaccreditation processes, site visits, and reaffirmation communications.
  • Contributes to research projects involving analyses of student success and program outcomes using university data by applying a variety of techniques as well as learn and learn and apply predictive modeling techniques.
  • Develops content and methodological knowledge of common practices in qualitative and quantitative approaches in higher education settings.
  • Generates and integrates data sources from diverse sources and effectively manages data quality issues.
  • Identifies, tracks and supports reporting on student and program outcomes.
  • Maintains proficiency in student, faculty, and other data sets including data definitions and data structures, relational database structures, survey data sets, and other data information systems.
  • Supports the ongoing data tracking and management of enrollment, course, and other student data needs using various systems (e.g., PeopleSoft and Ad Astra).
  • Prepares reports and analyses on student and course enrollment and course scheduling.
  • Supports the development and analysis of course distribution and unit load trends, including course-level enrollment outcomes and projections.
  • Develops data reports, dashboards, and data visualizations as needed on standard and ad hoc topics.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Project management skills, which include but are not limited to clear and concise communication, organization and time/task management abilities, planning and scheduling, technical and research knowledge, and adept in relationship and team building.
  • Ability to manage and oversee multiple programs’ operational needs, execute logistics to ensure their efficacy, and provide recommendations of areas of improvement.
  • Ability to apply analytic mindset and use appropriate techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of policies, programs, and practices.
  • Ability to identify important insights from various data and program sources and suggest implications for university policy and practices.
  • Ability to support academic leaders on their enrollment, program, and assessment management practices.
  • General familiarity with descriptive and inferential statistical methods and similar techniques.
  • Ability to learn advanced and quasi-experimental evaluation techniques such as regression discontinuity and propensity score adjustments.
  • Ability to learn and implement automated predictive modeling in collaboration with other staff and share the results with other stakeholders.
  • Ability to produce analyses and statistical models in software packages such as IBM SPSS and R using command syntax.
  • Data management skills and the ability to generate query, merge, transform, and restructure diverse data sets and account for missing, duplicated, and unmatched data using SQL and similar techniques.
  • Ability to learn and apply statistical models that relate to enrollment planning (e.g., regression, moving average).
  • Ability to test and refine numerical projection techniques in tools such as Excel, SPSS, and R.
  • Ability to explain statistical and quantitative issues to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills.
  • Ability to produce tables and graphical analyses in software systems such as Tableau and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of data presentation conventions and techniques.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university
  • Three years of progressively responsible administrative or professional experience which is applicable to the functional area in which the studies are to be conducted or which has demonstrated the ability to perform, or the potential to rapidly learn and apply complex survey techniques and analytical reporting. The rank of Assistant Professor or higher in a four-year college or university; or the rank of Instructor for at least two years in a recognized college or university, and demonstrated experience in research or special study work may be substituted for the three years of experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration, computer or data science, or other related fields
  • Three or more years of experience in a similar function
  • Experience in higher education research, project management, enrollment management and/or scheduling concepts and procedures
  • Experience running statistical models and predictions (such as linear and binary regressions) on higher education data sets




Compensation

Classification: Associate, Academic and Institutional Studies I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,360/month - $5,510/month
Salary Range: $4,217/month - $7,630/month
