This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 30% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences), available in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. Duties will include research and teaching relating to the development and application of advanced quantitative methods in fisheries stock assessment and other areas of fisheries science. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding actively to support their program. The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in their program area.
The position represents an important component of a strong, established fisheries science program and growing programmatic emphasis at UF and IFAS on sustainable fisheries, marine ecosystems, and the global seafood system. UF and IFAS are also focused on broader inter-disciplinary efforts with many collaborators (i.e. Florida Sea Grant, other UF units, academic institutions, local/state federal agencies, and the private sector) to address the challenges of sustainable fisheries and marine resource conservation in the context of environmental change. Particularly relevant to this position are collaborations with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and with the NOAA Southeast Fishery Science Center, both of which maintain active stock assessment programs. This position is thus part of an integrated, interdisciplinary initiative to support the sustainable management and use of state, regional, and international marine resources.
The desired focus of the position is the development and application of advanced quantitative methods to fisheries stock assessment and to the wider field of marine resource and fisheries sustainability. In addition to fisheries stock assessment, areas of application may include for example population, ecosystem and fisheries system modeling; management strategy evaluation, and spatial fisheries modeling and analyses.
The successful candidate will develop and implement a world-class research and teaching program in quantitative fisheries stock assessment and management. The candidate will identify and address needs and opportunities for advanced quantitative methods to contribute to fisheries sustainability. In pursuit of these goals, the candidate will work closely with partner institutions at the state, national and international levels and provide education and training in quantitative methods to undergraduate and graduate students as well as professional audiences.
The applicant should possess an excellent quantitative skill set and a research record or high demonstrated research potential in their discipline, and the ability to teach an introductory, as well as an advanced fisheries stock assessment, class. Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for interdisciplinary applied research is desirable. The applicant should also have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the motivation to work in multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will be expected to secure external funding to support their research program, publish in appropriate disciplinary and interdisciplinary national and international journals, and thus develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program. The successful candidate is expected to promote a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of their work.
The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.
Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
