Job Summary

The Auburn University Bookstore is seeking a buyer for its apparel department. The candidate will responsible for the planning, selection, purchase and financial performance of collegiate apparel and merchandise for resale.

Essential Functions

This position develops and executes a merchandise assortment strategy for categories of business for resale that supports the department’s sales volume and metric goals. Prepares merchandise plans by analyzing items purchased by product category, type, quantity, season and customer, studying floor space and floor plans; integrating forecasts for purchases and timing of delivery. Plans seasonal assortments, pricing strategy, promotions, and manages product life cycle. Tailors assortment to primary (and seasonal) market. Responsible for development and execution of the merchandise and display strategy. Quantitative analysis and reporting.

Additional duties include tracking the delivery of PO’s, addressing shipment issues and receiving errors, assisting with receiving and e-commerce, customer service, student supervision, hand-to-hand selling, stocking, and stockroom organization.

May assist in overseeing a satellite location of the bookstore either on or off campus.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

A strong working knowledge of retail math and inventory control systems is required. Proven proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Suites is required. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, negotiation skills, analytical skills, initiative and a track record of successful decision making and sound judgment. The candidate must have excellent time management and organizational skills and have the ability to work successfully both individually and as a part of a team. The ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required. Overnight travel is required up to three times each year.

Minimum Technology Skills

Proficiency in computer and point of sale systems, building spreadsheets in Excel.

Minimum License and Certifications

Desired Qualifications

Preferred qualifications: Bachelor degree in a business field, fashion merchandising, or related; collegiate retailing/collegiate buying experience; familiarity with the PrismRBS inventory control system; experience using an open-to-buy system; knowledge of merchandise turns, GMROI, and a proven ability to analyze and interpret data and make sound decisions based off the data. Retail sales or retail management experience in the fashion industry is a plus.
