Job Description:

Serving as a member of the UF Advancement and UF Health development leadership teams, the Assistant/Associate Vice President (AVP) for the College of Medicine will assist in managing the College of Medicine’s portion of the university’s fundraising campaign. In this role, the incumbent will be responsible for implementing programs and infrastructure in support of UF Health and will help oversee select campaign initiatives. He or she will serve as a member of the leadership team that helps lead fundraising programs that will unite stakeholders behind a vision for philanthropy in UF Health. Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President & Chief Advancement Officer (SRAVP/CAO) for UF Health, this position will collaborate with key partners relating, but not limited to annual giving, grateful patients, stewardship, and communications and will work closely with the research team to identify new prospects. He or she will manage a high-level portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects ($1M+), and will manage his/her team and inspire a culture of high performance, collegiality and professionalism throughout the organization.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

Portfolio Management
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual prospects, donors and corporate and foundation prospects with a focus on acquiring major gifts of $1M and above.
  • Partner with physicians, researchers, administrators and medical team members in identifying and cultivating prospects and in presenting needs and priorities effectively in written and oral communications.
  • Build and manage relationships, utilizing a strategic moves management approach to yield maximum philanthropic support in a timely fashion.
  • Develop and present concept papers and gift proposals, and steward gifts in ways that are meaningful to donors and appropriate to the vision, mission, and values of UF Advancement and UF Health.
UF Health Advancement Leadership
  • Manage the leaders of high performance teams through proactive coaching and engagement, utilizing Talent Reviews, performance management best practices, and other means. Provide leadership, counsel on matters relating to fundraising, and accountability by establishing goals in alignment with unit objectives, developing metrics, and strategic planning.
  • Partner with the SRAVP/CAO and UF Health academic leadership to facilitate the creation of interdisciplinary and unit-specific fundraising priorities and monitor fundraising progress toward those goals.
  • Serve as a member of the Campaign Leadership Council, Volunteer Workgroup, and other workgroups/councils that support campaign and strategic planning efforts.
    Articulate funding priorities and inspires a bold vision for the future of UF Health through visioning exercises.
  • Implement, track, and report accountability metrics in alignment with the campaign plan. Approve and evaluate the achievement of short and long term goals and work plans.
    Identify and recruit top talent in order to expand the effectiveness of the team through increased intellectual diversity.
  • Evaluate and develop a strong sense of teamwork by establishing an environment of mentoring and support. Coach the team regularly through team and one-on-one meetings, and support a team culture that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable for all members of the team.
  • Foster a strong sense of collaboration within the team and throughout the UF Health Advancement team and encourage partnerships that support the interests of both benefactors (donors or prospects) and College initiatives.
  • Plan and monitor the budget, using resources for best results in fundraising and planning activities involving volunteers, prospects, faculty and administration.
  • Oversee team members and ensure processes are in alignment with the Vision of TB2 and S.E.T. Values; uses best talent management practices; ensures best practices in office systems, practices, files and record keeping; ensures effective use of strategic tools and resources such as contact reports, prospect management, research, and analysis, and the Advance database.
Faculty & Physician Engagement
  • Work closely with the Senior Associate Vice President & Chief Advancement Officer, the Dean for the College of Medicine, and the Chief Executive Officer of Shands Hospital to advance a vision for grateful patient fundraising that furthers the interests of the College and UF Health.
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with faculty and physicians. Maintain regular meetings with Department Chairs and other faculty and physicians to develop an understanding of clinical programs, areas of research strength and grateful patient/faculty referral base.
  • Cultivate relationships and collaborate closely with individuals throughout the College of Medicine; identify and engage philanthropy champions among clinical teams/individuals.
  • Design and implement trainings to increase awareness and understanding of grateful patient fundraising, partnering with development colleagues and subject matter experts as needed.
  • Invite and receive grateful patient referrals from clinical department faculty and respond with an action, when appropriate, to patient referrals generated by the UF Health Development Office.
Strategic Initiatives
  • Serve as a member of the UF Health Office of Development & Alumni Affairs senior leadership team.
  • Develop UF Health fundraising strategies and operational plans to increase philanthropy, engage constituents, and exceed annual fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with UF Advancement Talent Management, UF, and UF Health Human Resources to perform organizational structure reviews and optimize staff performance to successfully achieve fundraising goals and prepare for the upcoming campaign.
  • Work in conjunction with the SRAVP/CAO to evaluate development personnel, strategic or operational plans, and individual metrics and goals.
  • Provide direction, strategic planning, leadership, and counsel on matters relating to fundraising and operations.
  • Ensure accountability and oversee staffing, including establishing goals in alignment with unit objectives, and develop and implement appropriate metrics.
  • Provide oversight for key development leaders reviewing cultivation/solicitation strategies and increasing the effectiveness of all development activities.
  • Initiate, plan and support activities and events involving volunteers, donors, and prospects, both on campus and regionally.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on grateful patient fundraising and physician engagement within the UF Advancement community and seek to elevate the reputation of UF Health’s advancement initiatives within the industry.
Expected Salary:

Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and eight years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and ten years of appropriate experience with demonstrated success soliciting gifts at $1 million and above in an institution of higher education.

Valid Florida driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A proven strategic leader with a history of successful higher education program leadership in alumni relations, development, or marketing/communications.
  • Seven to ten years of major gift fundraising experience with documented success in cultivating and soliciting major gifts of $100,000 and above from individual and corporate prospects with campaign experience.
  • Prior experience in a college or university setting, enthusiasm for fundraising in a comprehensive research university, and the desire to work collegially within a goal-oriented fundraising organization.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, methods, and standards.
  • Familiarity with the philanthropic culture and character of UF Health is preferable, as is a demonstrated appreciation for the unique role that healthcare — particularly hospitals — play in the larger context of the community and the overall state of healthcare.
  • Expertise in developing solicitation strategies.
  • The ability to work strategically, develop and implement constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and a team player.
  • Competency in problem solving.
  • Must be an outstanding communicator and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal skills; and the ability to work collegially and interact effectively with a diverse constituency.
  • An appreciation for and support of diversity in the workplace in all its forms; proven success working with stakeholders; excellent strategic planning and project management skills; experience in a data-driven environment; organizational skills; and the ability to lead, influence and motivate others are required.
  • Working knowledge in these areas: Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, internet browsers, preferably Internet Explorer, E-mail. Working knowledge of a donor database, contact management and tracking system.
  • The ability and willingness to travel. A valid driver license and good driving record are essential.*
