Major/Essential Functions

Works one-on-one with students, faculty, and staff on every aspect of the writing process. Provides writing-related feedback at all levels of writing competency including (but not limited to): organization, rhetorical structure, outlining, thesis, development of argument, and integration of research. Provides writing-related feedback on a broad range of academic papers and professional career-related documents, including (but not limited to): research papers, assignments for courses, c.v. and resumes, personal statements for residency applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum two years college-level tutoring or college-level teaching experience, in any discipline. Minimum 3.5 GPA. Able to critique writing with professionalism and empathy, working with a range of clients: students, faculty, and staff. Proficient in offering online-only feedback, working efficiently in 50-minute sessions, one-on-one.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher.

Writing Sample: 3-4 pages, double spaced. Preferred: A piece of academic writing that uses sources and makes the standard rhetorical moves of academic writing.

Academic Transcript (official or unofficial): Most recent academic transcript showing a minimum of 3.5 GPA.

Recommendation/Referral: Two reference letters, emailed to writing.center@ttuhsc.edu, that should speak for 1) your writing skills, 2) your verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, and 3) your ability to assess work submitted by others and provide constructive feedback with empathy and patience.

Other Documents: Essay, 3-4 pages, double spaced. Tell us why you would like to work as a TTUHSC Writing Center tutor, what you expect to contribute to the TTUHSC community as a tutor, and what benefits you anticipate for yourself. Some things to include in your essay:
o Please describe your experiences with teaching or tutoring, whether writing or any other course.
o Describe what you learned from the above experiences, including challenges faced and problems overcome.
o Be sure to indicate the level of students, the kinds of writing taught or assignments evaluated, and the length of your teaching/tutoring appointment.
o If you have ever worked in a Writing Center, please be sure to indicate that information.
o In your essay, please share any other writing-related experiences you may have, formal (university-based) or personal.
o Lastly, if you have any training or experiences in specialized kinds of writing or writing instruction, such as English as a Foreign Language, technical and/or web-related writing, or scientific writing, please share.
