Director of Business Development

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:

This position is Eligible for Alternative Work Location
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) is increasing the diversity of its staff. Members of groups that are underrepresented in higher education administration are strongly encouraged to apply.

CSSH is the liberal arts center of Northeastern University's thriving academic community. The college's 17 schools, departments, and programs—with disciplines ranging from economics and history, to English and international affairs, just to name a few—form an interdisciplinary group of scholars with global perspectives and a culture of inclusion. The college's strategic areas of focus are centered on: 1) Resilience, Sustainability, Health, and Equity; 2) Cultural Transformations, Governance, and Globalization; and 3) Network Science, Computational Social Science, Digital Humanities, and Information Ethics. CSSH offers a wide variety of undergraduate programs, including 15 different majors as well as a diverse set of combined-major options, concentrations, minors, and five-year bachelor/master's degree PlusOne programs. The college also offers 8 PhD degrees, 14 master's degrees, and 12 graduate certificate programs. Graduate programs are offered in Boston main campus and across the university's global network. There is a strategic focus to identify and create opportunities for B2B, lifelong, and academic learners to gain timely, customized educational experiences that leverage online curricular offerings in key areas.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, while coordinating closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Director of Business Development plays a key role in leveraging this institutional commitment and expertise to build, expand, and nurture strategic relationships with the corporate, philanthropic, and public sectors. The Director is in charge of identifying new partners, developing outreach strategies, and then creating appropriate and effective engagement and programmatic opportunities. In particular, the Director is responsible for creating B2B partnerships and launching and growing executive education opportunities with partners. These partnerships will leverage CSSH's modularized online curricular offerings in fields such as data analytics, information ethics, resilience analysis, and urban informatics.

In addition, the Director of Business Development develops strategies and partnerships to augment experiential learning opportunities for students. Experiential learning takes many forms at Northeastern, from cooperative education, which has been a central component of a Northeastern education for over a century, to internships, research opportunities, service learning, and community-engaged capstone projects.

The Director of Business Development is part of a growing team that is located across Northeastern's network of campuses in the US, Canada, and the UK. In CSSH, the Director works closely with the Dean's leadership team, including the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and the Director of Marketing and Communications as well as the Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships and College Initiatives. Beyond CSSH, the Director collaborates closely with campus partners such as Enrollment Management, Global Launch Services, the Innovation Engine, the colleges and schools, and the global network of campuses.

The Director's primary responsibilities are as follows:
  • Provide leadership for mobility and industry-partnered academic and executive education programs in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, including program development, implementation, and management
  • Lead the efforts to cultivate program positioning and roll out, with a focus on growth areas that reflect demand from corporate and non-profit partnerships
  • Create, maintain, and improve successful relationships with corporate and non-profit partners
  • Create synergy in the areas of data analytics, information ethics, resilience analysis, and urban informatics within the university's global network, driving program differentiation and deepening impact
  • Nurture opportunities for B2B, lifelong, and academic learners to gain timely, customized educational experiences with a focus on online curricular offerings
  • Develop and implement strategies and partnerships to augment experiential learning opportunities for students
  • Actively collaborate with the college's graduate studies team and liaise with the university's enrollment management and professional program resources to support related operations, including: market identification, analysis and positioning; program outreach and promotion; budget planning and execution; partnership initiation and management; curriculum implementation and instructional management

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree required; 4-6 years of experience in management-level positions in a for-profit or not-for-profit organization
  • Experience in business development and partnerships roles
  • Excellent management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • The ability to develop and lead strategic initiatives and follow through to completion

Preferred Qualifications:

A high degree of self-motivation and self-direction is essential, coupled with a proven track record of collaborative work

Salary Grade:
13

Additional Information:
This position will be based on Northeastern's Boston campus, and one or more days will likely be remote. Fully remote employment status with occasional visits to the Boston campus and the other Northeastern campuses will be considered.
