Position Announcement:

The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a transformational leader to serve as Director of the School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Security.  The Director will provide energetic, collaborative, and visionary leadership, as well as principled administrative guidance and advocacy for the mission of the School in teaching, research, and public service/outreach. The Director will support undergraduate and graduate education, teaching effectiveness, and online programs. The Director will also value research and scholarship, including inter- and multi-disciplinary collaborations, as well as partnerships with community and professional agencies. The Director serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School, reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The position is full-time, 12-month, tenure track, and begins July 1, 2022.  Salary competitive and commensurate with experience.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:

The Director holds responsibility for leadership of the School and representing the School to the College and University administration. In addition, the School Director:

  • oversees and guides strategic planning and analysis of School operations, budget, technology and facilities, and fundraising;
  • guides student recruitment and retention practices, especially for first generation and minority students;
  • engages in program and curriculum development for undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including online programs;
  • fosters community and professional partnerships that support the teaching and research missions of the School;
  • engages in regular attention to faculty recruitment, review, and retention practices, and also promotes diversity, inclusion, and faculty governance;
  • promotes scholarship productivity and fosters an environment conducive to impactful, externally funded scholarly activities among faculty and students; and
  • remains engaged as a member of the University and active in scholarship and teaching activities.


Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in criminal justice, criminology, forensic science, security, or a closely related field; administrative experience that indicates an ability to manage a diverse school with multiple programs; evidence of a distinguished and sustained scholarly record that would qualify the applicant for tenure and the rank of at least associate professor; and evidence of teaching excellence.




Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred rank of full professor; experience with programs represented in the School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Security; experience with graduate programs, including online education; experience with innovative pedagogical practices; and experience working with criminal justice, forensic science, or security practitioners.



About the School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Security:

The School of Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, and Security is a vibrant intellectual community of 13 full-time faculty members on both the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses and over 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Academic programs include undergraduate majors in Criminal Justice and Forensics, as well as a Master’s program in Criminal Justice. Undergraduate and graduate programs in Security are currently under development. The School has strong relationships with justice agencies throughout the state, region, and nation and prepares students for careers in criminal justice and forensics, as well as success in graduate study or law school.
