Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine are seeking an outstanding leader to fill the position as Chief of Service (COS) for the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine (APM). This is an academic anesthesiologist position at the rank of Associate Professor without tenure (WOT) due to funding or Professor WOT due to funding, depending on qualifications, in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Washington.  This position is without tenure and is full-time with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30).  The anticipated start date is January 2022 or soon thereafter. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Harborview Medical Center (HMC), a major teaching hospital of the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine. HMC is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the four-state area of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.  The emphasis is on trauma, burn surgery, neurosurgery, and orthopedics.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The COS APM works closely with the Department Chair and the Medical Director, and other senior leaders, to achieve a wide range of hospital and departmental objectives.  Core expectations and objectives include, but are not limited to, clinical excellence and leadership on quality, safety, and patient-centered initiatives; a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion; graduate resident education; fiscally responsible and fair staffing; and proactive anesthesiology participation at the institutional level.  Furthermore, the COS APM is responsible for recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty, appointing and re-appointing through the credentialing process, developing and sustaining robust research programs, nurturing the next generation of physician scientists, and responding to human resource (HR) issues in a fair and timely manner.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have outstanding clinical and leadership skills and the ability to work well in a team setting.  A substantial track record of service and administrative excellence, including experience with care in a safety-net environment and leadership in equity, diversity and inclusion is required.  Demonstrated academic accomplishment in scholarship and education are essential.  Must have MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent).  Must be Board certified or eligible (or foreign equivalent) in anesthesiology and eligible to obtain State of Washington medical licensure by start of appointment.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
