Job Description:

The Global & Career Advisor is the lead staff member providing career advising and counseling efforts on behalf of the Center for Global & Career Services (CGCS) to students that may be seeking internships, employment, or other opportunities while enrolled or post-graduation. This role will also advise a limited number of students interested in study away or abroad opportunities and international students studying at the College.

Essential Functions: The Global & Career Advisor will coordinate activities to integrate career planning and global experiences into students' academic and personal development. Responsibilities include presentation and workshop development and delivery, career, internship and global advising in one-on-one and small group settings, administration and interpretation of  career assessments, and support of  on-campus recruiting efforts. This position has frequent contact with students and faculty in a variety of settings.

1.Career Advising and Counseling:

  • Assist students in developing the necessary skills associated with career development and successful transition into the workforce or graduate school;
  • Support students preparing for internship and job searches through resume, cover letter, e- portfolio and social media reviews, mock interviews (in person, online, and telephone) in one-on-one, small group, or classroom settings;
  • Work closely with faculty, , student groups, clubs, and support offices to plan and deliver career related programs and presentations for a variety of majors;
  • Develop advising resources and facilitation guides to support students;
  • Administer and interpret various vocational and interest inventories and advise students on possible career paths through the use of tools including, but not limited to, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Focus2, and StrengthsFinder.

2. Study Away and International Student Advising:

  • Collaborate with the Director to counsel and provide support to students preparing for, enrolled in or returning from a study away experience;
  • Support Director and faculty in developing and coordinating short-term faculty led international and domestic study away programs and internships;
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) to assist in the enrollment, retention, persistence, and support of international students who directly matriculate to the College and to those who enroll through pathway and pre-pathway programs.

3. Internship Advising and Counseling:

  • Collaborate with Director to support accessible, student-centered process for internship placement and facilitation;
  • Advise and counsel students seeking information about the College's internship process.

4. Event Management and Outreach Programming:

  • Collaborate with others in the CGCS to plan and execute programming during events including the Career & Networking Conference (held annually in the fall), the Study Abroad Fair (held annually in the fall), International Student Orientation (fall & spring semesters) and the Career & Internship Fair (held annually in the spring);
  • Represent the CGCS at college events, including, but not limited to Open House, Accepted Student Day, Orientation, and other targeted recruitment or retention events.

5. Administrative Functions:

  • Utilize technologies to track and monitor information about student engagement with the CGCS;
  • Stay abreast of industry information including hiring trends, economic information, and resume design;
  • Research, develop, and maintain relevant content for career and study abroad materials to include information about careers, graduate education,  employment and study abroad programs and internships;
  • Coordinate on-campus recruiting and application process for CGCS scholarships, fellowships, internships, and other student positions.

Additional Functions: The Global and Career Advisor will, from time-to-time, be required to perform additional related duties to ensure the success of the CGCS. Those duties may include:

  • Providing superb customer service to employers, students, families, faculty, and staff;
  • Participate in committees relevant to the work of the CGCS;
  • Serve as back up for the Assistant Director, Graduate Outcomes & Operations, or the Administrative Assistant as needed;
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor of his/her designee.

 

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree is required.
  • At least three years of progressively responsible experience in career development, international education or related field.
  • A record of leadership in successfully administering career advising and internship programs and outreach initiatives.
  • Evidence of using data to inform goal setting, planning, and assessment efforts.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of diverse employment sectors and trends.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to be approved as a DSO by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Counseling, Student Development, Education, Human Resources, or a related area is preferred;
  • Experience working with technology platforms including Banner, Canvas, Handshake, Qualtrics, and viaTRM.
