Job Description:

Essential Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:

Works closely with both the Senior Investment Officer and Chief Investment Officer to:
  • Execute daily operational duties surrounding university investment management.
  • Implement decisions made by staff and the Investment Sub-committee.
  • Prepare comprehensive communications (monthly reports, quarterly meeting materials, project deliverables, etc.) for University officials, Investment Sub-committee members, other stakeholders, as necessary.


Tracking and reporting of performance, liquidity, fee, fund terms and statistical information. Would perform these duties in our existing software and lead future reviews of other software packages, if needed.

Assist investment officers through due diligence processes and manage data collection / organization of both existing and prospective manager databases.

Be the primary person responsible for reporting and data requests (to be reviewed by CIO/SIO) for the accounting and financial services team. This would include distribution schedules, cash flow projections and management, private capital flows, new manager/redeemed manager transitions, reconciliations of account balances (custodian to internal accounting software), etc.

Assist investment officers with transaction logistics for each manager transition.

Be the primary person responsible for the data collection and delivery for the annual external audit and tax return filings. Includes preparation materials for and key liaison to Controller/Financial Services staff to complete annual audit and tax returns.

Monitors compliance with Furman's Investment Policy.

Expand knowledge across asset classes and continually enhances expertise in operational improvements.

Attends some external training/conferences to enhance skills.

Drafts, prepares, and/or presents reports for SIO/CIO, Investment Committee members, or other stakeholders as needed.

Maintains effective relationship with the operational team members at University's investment consulting firm(s), custodian, and conducts periodic competitive processes for services.

Networks with operations staff of aspirant/similar sized endowments to attain best practices. Seeks to cultivate and expand Furman's network.

Assist with Ad Hoc information requests, project work, and committee work and performs other duties as assigned.

Completes surveys on behalf of the investment office, e.g. NACUBO-TIAA, Greenwich Associates, Various Wall Street Capital Introduction groups, Institutional Investor

Pursues professional development in the form of additional training (as position requires)

Demonstrate all aspects of key institutional initiatives, including student interaction, “The Furman Advantage” by example, etc.

Relationships/Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Reports directly to CIO. Must be team-oriented fit within an open, transparent and continuously improving culture.

Daily contact with SIO/CIO. Frequent contact with University financial staff to plan, coordinate, problem solve, and make suggestions related to mutual goals. Frequent contact with custodian bank; investment consultant; operations analysts for other endowments;

Tasks involve management of data and/or procedures that address opportunities or situations that are usually well-defined. Work will occasionally involve non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.

Work is performed independently on routine assignments; non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Final decisions recommended to the Chief Investment Officer. Expect collaborative efforts with other employees within Financial Services & the division of Finance and Administration

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree (business/accounting/finance preferred).
  • Minimum 2-3 years relevant experience within investment office setting. 3+ years preferred
  • CIPM, CFA, CAIA or similar designation is preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts, methods & models, and their application to investments
  • Proficiency with standard office software and specialized investment software (e.g. Evestment) Intermediate to advanced experience with spreadsheet modeling.
  • Ability to assert university's position in discussions with outside contacts.
  • Familiarity with investment accounting pronouncements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


Work Conditions:

  • Work is performed in usual office conditions. Infrequent travel required, with exception of occasional conference attendance.
