The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for two full-time, open rank positions in black queer diaspora studies. Both appointments will begin at the start of the fall semester, academic year 2022-23. The successful candidates will have significant administrative experience, particularly in the field of black studies, and demonstrate a strong record of research, publication and teaching on gender and/or sexuality in Africa and/or the African Diaspora. We will give preference to scholars who attend specifically to the African continent, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and/or the U.S. South and strongly encourage candidates who are fluent in an African diasporic language other than English to apply.

We seek applications from scholars who engage in humanistic or social science inquiry into black LGBTQ communities, black queer theory, and/or black queer cultural production. We hope to make at least one hire with an emphasis on the literary, visual and performing arts. All candidates must be committed to building and promoting black queer diaspora studies at The University of Texas by cultivating intellectual community across disciplines; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to black queer studies and related topics at the introductory and advanced levels; actively engaging in service, such as participating on and chairing search committees; organizing lecture series and other related programming; and mentoring and recruiting faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Historically, Queer Studies and Black Studies have had strong links to Women's and Gender Studies, a tradition we hope to continue. The ideal candidates will help the department to strengthen its relationship with the Center for Women's and Gender Studies (CWGS) and the LGBTQ Studies Program.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Position funding is subject to budget availability.

Qualifications

All University of Texas faculty engage in simultaneous research, teaching, and service. We strongly encourage applications from scholars with a doctorate in African and/or African Diaspora studies or another black studies equivalent. We also welcome applicants with doctorates in traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary fields whose career-long scholarship has been on queer people of African descent.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. for appointment.
