The Department of Infectious Diseases is seeking aResearch Nurse Program Manager who will assume a supervisory role in research and collaborative activities between the Division of Infectious Disease and our long-term care partners.

This position must have extensive experience working with leadership, administration, and staff in long-term care facilities, and must also have prior experience in a leadership position in infection prevention and control. They will be responsible for the oversight and consultation of a large variety of activities and research activities related to infection prevention and control for multiple long-term care facilities, each with over 200 employees. This may include but is not limited to planning the overall development of the long-term care infection control collaborative program, the design and coordination of educational programs and materials, the training of both internal and long-term care personnel, the assessment of infection prevention and control programs in the long-term care industry with corresponding recommendations, coordination of departmental research projects, implementation support of best practices in long-term care infection prevention and control, and the coordination of outbreak investigations.

The position requires a unique knowledge of epidemiology, infectious diseases, strategic leadership, and the principles and practice of infection control and prevention, with experience working in the long-term care setting. The individual must be able to communicate infection prevention measures and strategy to a wide variety of stakeholders, ranging from educating front line staff in infection prevention practices to communicating strategy with facility administration and corporate leadership.

The position must be able to interpret and identify how to implement federal, state, local, and corporate infection prevention policies and communicate these findings to both internal Johns Hopkins stakeholders as well as external long-term care partners.

This position reports to the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious disease. The position will directly oversee research assistants in the department of medicine and collaborate with human factors engineers at the Armstrong Institute.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Budget Responsibility:

  • Manage meetings, travel, intervention design, and system educational sessions within program budget.

Authority/Decision Making Level:

  • Makes decisions on infection prevention practice and issues in the long-term care setting.
  • Initiates investigations as needed.
  • Requires ability to serve as subject matter expert on variety of infection control related topics, including surveillance, interventions, antimicrobial stewardship, construction projects, policies, infection reporting, etc.
  • Makes research decisions.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Possesses skills and authority to provide clinical and operational expertise, oversight, and coordination of infection control practices for a large number of staff and administrators across a network of long-term care facilities partnering with the Johns Hopkins Health System.

Problem Solving:

  • Independently solves complex problems within prescribed deadlines. Ability to offer recommendations for decision making requiring Senior Epidemiologist and Executive Director input.

Information Management:

  • Must have computer reporting expertise.
  • Analyzes and interprets pertinent information, confidential patient information and evaluates scientific literature.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline required. Master's degree strongly preferred. Five years experience in the specialty or a related area required. A minimum of four years of epidemiological/infection prevention experience. Related master's degree may be considered in lieu of some experience. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Acceptable completion of the BMC credentialing process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health
  • Certified training in infection prevention.
  • Experience working with or in long-term care facilities.

  • Previous supervisory experience.

  • Experience performing clinical research.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current infection control practices in long-term care settings required.
  • Demonstrated team building and collaborative management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills required.
  • Ability to build consensus among multiple constituencies, including community and academic physicians and nursing home and health system representatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Must be able to travel among nursing homes or assisted living facilities in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region

Required Licensure, Certification, etc.

  • Certification in Infection Control preferred within 2 years of hire into this position.

Machines, Tools, Equipment:

  • Computer experience in word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, and database management required.
  • Experience with electronic medical record and/or electronic surveillance system preferred.

Working Conditions: Travel required to long-term care facilities in the collaborative on intermittent basis, remote working optional, some weekend coverage may be necessary.

  • Works in office, work-from-home, and field environment.
  • Requires relatively frequent travel among nursing homes or assisted living facilities in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region.
  • Probable exposure to communicable diseases; yet the potential for harm or contamination is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
  • Works flexible hours to meet the needs of occurrence such as during an outbreak.
  • Will be required to carry the on-call 24 hours daily by long-range beeper on a rotating basis and carry the 24/7 pager.
  • May require other domestic travel for site visits and professional conferences.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
