Assistant Professor

The Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health invites applications for a full-time, tenure track research and teaching faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering. We are seeking applicants with specific expertise in occupational and environmental medicine and broader research and teaching expertise in environmental health sciences.

Applicants should be board-certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational and environmental medicine and will be responsible for co-directing the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency (OEMR) within the NIOSH-funded Johns Hopkins Education and Research Center for Occupational Safety and Health. The program currently includes two residents per year for each year of the two-year program. Responsibilities include: resident recruitment, selection, supervision and evaluation, advising trainees in coursework, monitoring resident progress, and development and evaluation of practicum rotations; ensuring compliance with applicable rules and regulations established by the School’s Graduate Medical Education Committee, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medicine Education, and other oversight bodies (e.g., the School’s MPH program); and all other aspects of the OEMR administration.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent and sustainable sponsored research program and develop a teaching portfolio that enhances the Department’s teaching mission. There will be opportunities for teaching, especially lectures in clinical occupational and environmental toxicology and medicine, and training doctoral students if desired. The ideal candidate will be a visionary individual with a background in studies of occupational and environmental impacts on human health who enjoys working in a highly interdisciplinary team environment. Excellent collaboration opportunities exist within the Department and throughout the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Medicine.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
