The San Francisco State University Department of Family, Interiors, Nutrition & Apparel offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in interior design beginning August 2022. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research is grounded in commitment to social and racial justice and includes program specific topics such as residential construction and interiors, commercial interiors, building codes and applications, and evidence based design development. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic community/department/program. 

 

The Family, Interiors, Nutrition & Apparel (FINA) Department has been active in addressing quality of life issues at San Francisco State University for over a century and has firm roots in providing quality education which addresses trends and issues that impact the lives of individuals, families, and communities. The department goal is to provide a transformative student experience which advances understanding of contemporary issues that influence food, shelter, clothing, and relationship needs. Implicit within the four FINA programs is a commitment to addressing racial and social justice through curricula, self-expression, student engagement, and example. The core of each of the FINA programs is to encourage critical thought, diverse ways of understanding, and the development of ethical professional practices which will enhance the quality of life for those who our students will serve.

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in interior design, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing research scholarship program in one’s area of specialty, mentoring junior faculty and faculty lecturers and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Doctoral degree in interior design, architecture, housing, or closely related field. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities

 

Preferred:

  • Record of teaching contributions in the area of interior design
  • Active record of scholarship related to specialty area and evidence of external support or the potential for external funding of these activities.
  • Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments
