Primary Purpose:
To provide instruction in for-credit activity classes offered by the Health & Human Performance ( HHP ) department. The HHP department offers a wide variety of physical activity classes such as weight training, circuit training, yoga, pilates, tai chi, martial arts, studio cycling, jogging, mountain biking, basketball, softball, rugby, volleyball, hip-hop, aerobic dance, step aerobics, and many more. The instructor must demonstrate safe and effective teaching and expertise in the activity for which they are applying.

Terms of Employment:
• This is a part-time (< .50 FTE ) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
• Part-Time Instructor compensation begins at Step 1 / $622 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is not always equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty positions are not represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• May include travel throughout the College district.
• Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
• COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
• The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered. Essential Functions:

1. Provide instruction in activity courses.This includes introducing students to the activity (history of, safety, effective training methods, etc). The instructor will safely and effectively lead/facilitate the class throughout a warm-up, exercise/activity session, and cool-down each day. The instructor will assess each student on participation as well as other academic assignments related to the activity taught. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on or off campus.
2. Teaching assignments in instructional time-blocks (e.g. early morning and/or late afternoon) as required by HHP department program scheduling and staffing needs.
3. Work cooperatively with the HHP Department Chair and faculty in developing and implementing syllabi, teaching methods, assignments, and grading standards to achieve program-wide student learning outcomes.
4. Hold one office hour per week for each activity class taught.
5. Be accessible and responsive to student, departmental and College communiqués, not only by addressing contacts face-to-face during class and office hours, but also by monitoring frequently and responding promptly to communications initiated via the faculty member’s departmental office mail box, COCC office telephone voicemail, COCC network electronic mail, and COCC Outlook conferences maintained by the department and its programs. Monitor and adhere to essential departmental and program information and curricular requirements relevant to part-time instructor’s teaching assignments communicated by other means (e.g. via orientation, voicemail, email, and individual meeting/s with the dept. chair and experienced program faculty peer/s).
6. Perform other essential duties by required deadlines relevant to part-time faculty teaching assignments, as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
1. Thorough knowledge in the physical activity that you will be instructing.
2. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
3. Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
4. Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment,
including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer controlled mixed media presentations.
5. Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
6. Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
7. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
8. Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
9. Ability to work with Health & Human Performance faculty and other COCC staffs at all levels.
10. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
11. Ability/skills to competently advise and/or serve students from a variety of background, respecting cultural and socio-economic differences. Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Requires the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms. Requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required:
1. Preparation in the form of a current instructor certification/license from an accredited certifying body in the activity in which you are applying to instruct –OR- a college certificate of completion or degree in a related area.
2. Prior teaching experience in the activity in which you are applying to instruct.

Licenses: Necessary for instruction in certain activity classes such as Zumba.
Certifications: Necessary for instruction in certain activity classes such as Pilates, Yoga, etc. Preferred Qualifications:

1. Current First Aid and CPR certification.
2. Past experience teaching at the college level.
