At postgraduate level our students come from all over the world to carry out research. Durham Chemistry is part of three Centres for Doctoral Training: SOFI (soft matter and interfaces), MosMed (Molecular Sciences for Medicine) and ReNU (renewable energy). Each year we admit around 120 single honours undergraduates and around 45 PhD students. The department holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award.
Durham University has recently secured EPSRC funding for a new laboratory-based X ray absoprtion and emission spectroscopy (XAS + XES) system to be based in the department of chemistry. The facility will also include ancillary equipment for energy materials and catalysis studies. The facility will be used by internal and external users, including through mail-in and remote access routes.
The post holder will be responsible, under a management board, for commissioning the equipment, training users, promoting the equipment and managing day-to-day operation of the equipment. This will include conducting training at in house and external events, liaising with internal and external collaborators and the management board, and identifying ways to ensure the long term sustainability of the facility (e.g. through relevant experimental or data analysis consultancy beyond the running of the equipment as a service). There will also be opportunities to develop collaborative research in the use of laboratory XAS.
