Academic Programs Coordinator, Upward Bound (Grant Funded)

Job Summary:
This is a 40 hour per week, salaried position. Develops, coordinates, implements and evaluates Upward Bound academic programs/activities using high school core curriculum programs and Federal guidelines to promote academic success for at-risk students.

Essential Functions:
1. Participates in planning and coordinates academic services for students, as determined by the Upward Bound Director, Upward Bound APC and Benton Harbor High School Curriculum Director, as warranted, and Counselors, and advises participants accordingly.
2. Evaluates students’ standardized test scores, high school records and course selections; ensures that students remain on core curriculum track; and reviews and revises participants’ Educational Development Plans (EDP) as necessary.
3. Identifies and selects students as potential Early/Middle College/Dual Enrollment participants based on college-entry assessment scores and academic record.
4. Monitors and documents participants’ academic progress towards high school graduation.
5. Coordinates individual tutoring needs to ensure participants’ growth in areas of deficiencies in core subjects and standardized tests.
6. Recommends, develops and assesses new academic support programs (such as workshops) or modifications to existing academic programs and activities to increase test scores, grade point averages, and retention.
7. Conducts academic and life skills workshops for participants and parents.
8. Coordinates the Upward Bound Summer Academic Institute Curriculum and grant requirements for summer program curriculum with the Benton Harbor School curriculum, as warranted; assists summer teachers with the development of curriculum and may teach core curriculum subjects.
9. Prepares special studies and/or reports associated with students’ academic progress.
10. Collect, manage, and maintain academic, demographic, and Upward Bound activity data that is to be reported on the Annual Performance Report as designated by the U.S. Department of Education
11. Provides Office Manager with participant academic records and information to be entered into participant database.
12. Conducts recruitment activities and interviews potential participants to determine academic and personal needs related to school completion and postsecondary enrollment, and makes referrals to the program director.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Under the direction of the Upward Bound Project Director, the Academic Programs Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing academic activities, and providing academic advising to participants.

Job Specifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required. Master’s degree preferred. Teacher certification preferred. Minimum of three years experience in teaching, education development, or related programs required. Experience working with at-risk students required. Database management preferred and confidentiality required
