Job Description

This position will support the Director as the Multicultural & Black/African-American Student Success administrative leader in the Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services (IMQ) specializing in working within the Multicultural & Black/African-American student communities on campus as well as working collaboratively with community organizations to identify Multicultural & Black/African-American community resources that provide additional support to NAU students. The Assistant Director, Inclusion: Multicultural & Black/African-American Student Success works to support, empower, and promote the success of students through powerful identity affirming programming and student engagement. Support for students includes providing leadership for student initiatives, multicultural programs and events, advising multicultural student organization, developing collaborative partnerships with university departments and outside constituent groups, and providing direct student support. This position will report directly to the IMQ Director.

The Assistant Director sets goals that align with the mission of IMQ and NAU as a whole, while assuming responsibility for Multicultural and Black/African-American campus programming; establishing and prioritizing short and long-term goals for the programs; and identifying measurable outcomes for the programs' implementation, growth, and assessment. This includes participation in the development of organizational goals and objectives, strategic planning and assessment, and participation on campus-wide committees.

Student Relationships and Services

  • Support and engage diverse groups of students with an emphasis on Multicultural & Black/African-American students.
  • Develop meaningful and appropriate one-on-one relationships with Multicultural & Black/African-American student populations that are based in empathy and compassion.
  • Maintains and enhances educational, social, support, referral, and resource programs and services for students regarding issues of multiculturalism, inclusion, as well as sexual and gender identities.
  • Advises student group members and leaders regarding program planning and development, group process concerns, leadership and personal development, and University policies.
  • Collaborate with Multicultural and Intersectional organizations, committees, and task forces to support students, specifically:
  • Student organizations
  • Healthcare professionals
  • Diversity Commissions
  • Community and Campus committees for event planning
  • Diversity Convocation Planning Committees
  • Develop resources to support multicultural and intersectional students such as newsletters, informational brochures, a webpage, support groups and other services.
  • Provide multicultural and intersectional resources and support to students through the following method:
  • Creating a safe space and environment for walk-ins and student interactions.
  • Lead multicultural and intersectional student support initiatives and provide input about multicultural/heritage celebration events and activities.
  • Develop and implement support programming and success initiatives for Multicultural & Black/African-American Student Success.
  • Monitor engagement of students through event attendance, and provide direct student support through mentoring, personal contacts, and appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain student files, databases, and records in accordance with federal guidelines (FERPA).
  • Interpret and effectively explain college and university policies and procedures to students.
  • Present, participate in, and assess various multicultural/intersectional workshops, campus activities and events.
  • Work with staff to educate and promote a campus-wide understanding of Multicultural & Black/African-American cultures.

Teamwork and Professionalism

  • Perform duties in alignment with IMQ’s mission, values, and practices.
  • Manage assigned staff which includes Inclusion coordinator, graduate assistants and interns.
  • Collaborate and participate in programming with university administrators, faculty, and staff on various committees and projects to improve the student experience.
  • Develop a positive image of IMQ through contacts with students, parents, staff and faculty; work with a diverse student and employee population using practices of inclusion to support an effective work and service-oriented environment.
  • Serve as the office liaison and expert on Multicultural & Black/African-American student success knowledge and trends.

Administrative

  • Support front desk operations through understanding of processes and provide support as needed.
  • Participate in the hiring and on-boarding of new professional and student employees.
  • Demonstrate professional communication through various channels (written, phone, in-person, presentations) to a variety of audiences including campus partners, parents, students, leaders, and community groups/organizations.
  • Contribute to the planning and organizing of the annual office calendar as well as attend office and university events throughout the academic year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Assessment

  • In cooperation with Student Affairs Leadership and other university offices, administer needs assessment and analyzes data to determine needed support and resources designed to assist in increasing student retention and graduation.
  • Complete evaluation of programming and materials to ensure Multicultural & Black/African-American students are participating, retaining and graduating.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree AND 3-5 years’ experience in advisement, student mentoring programming, or student success programming, which includes 2-4 years supervising and coordinating the work of others; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and at least two years of professional experience working with multicultural/intersectional students in higher education.
  • Candidates should have considerable knowledge of the developmental needs of multicultural and intersectional students in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and presenting to diverse communities and an understanding of multiple identity development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic principles of student development theory and, specifically, major trends and issues faced by ethnic minority students attending U.S. colleges or universities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity and multiculturalism.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in grant/proposal writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Previous and progressively responsible experience providing student development services and facilitating student success within a college or university environment.
