Research Technologist

The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a highly motivated, energetic individual with an interest in biomedical research to work in the field of Retinal Regenerative Medicine as Research Technologist. We use stem cell biology to study human neuronal and glial cells. We use CRISPR genome editing to develop models of: 1) human retinal disease, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases such as glaucoma, and 2) demyelinating diseases (such as multiple sclerosis where myelin sheath on the CNS neurons is lost).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • This work will involve considerable amounts of cell culture work.
  • Working under the supervision of the principal investigator and other laboratory personnel, the successful applicant will be responsible for maintaining human pluripotent stem cells, and differentiating them into human retinal ganglion and human oligodendrocyte cells.
  • They will also assist in various drug discovery work to identify small molecules, genes, and pathways relevant to oligodendrocyte development, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies for patients with multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating disorders.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field is required.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques, including DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, Western Blotting, and cell culture is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some relevant post-undergraduate work experience in the field of cellular and molecular biology is desirable.
  • Experience with cell culture work, ideally with human stem cell culture, is required.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain clear written records and be able to carry-out experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication skill and ability to read and interpret scientific articles and scientific data.
  • Careful attention to detail and thoughtfulness on how to interpret, troubleshoot and improve experiments.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $19.44/hr (commensurate with experience)
