JOB DESCRIPTION

University of Indianapolis Department of Theatre seeks applicants for a temporary Scene Shop Manager to work approximately 20 hours weekly beginning immediately. Candidates will supervise and train student personnel and construction crews in the daily work of the scene shop. Candidate will facilitate and supervise the fabrication of scenery, oversee the cutting and construction of built scenic elements for two department productions. Candidates will plan and organize workflow and a safe operation of scene shop and its equipment. Candidate will aid the faculty and student designers in plans for production of scenic elements and seeing projects through to completion.



RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise and train scene shop student labor
  • Supervise and participate in the construction of scenery and properties for two productions
  • Adhere to and participate in the development of production time lines
  • Communicate construction progress to Production Manager/Technical Director and other departmental personnel as applicable on a regular basis
  • Perform work in carpentry, metalworking, plastics, painting, electrical and mechanical installations, and other work related to the fabrication of scenery and props
  • Research, recommend, and order materials for all departmental productions
  • Coordinate with Production Manager/Technical Director, Scenic Designer, Scenic Artist, Props Master, Master Electrician and other department heads for use of scene shop facilities and resources to ensure smooth operation of the production process
  • Perform maintenance and repair of scene shop equipment and facilities, Ransburg Auditorium, the Studio Theatre, and ancillary spaces
  • Supervise and train all scene shop labor in the proper and safe operation of all equipment and materials handling techniques in accordance with current Safety and Health guidelines set forth by OSHA, the University, and the Production Manager/Technical Director
  • This role serves as a Campus Security Authority
  • This role requires a clean or acceptable driving record
QUALIFICATIONS
  • The ability to lift and carry materials weighing 70+ pounds is required
  • Ability to work occasionally on a stage grid at a height of 60 feet is required
  • At least two years practical work experience in the technical preparation and construction of theatre scenery and stage units is required
  • Mechanical skills in the use of hand and power tools are required
  • Supervisory skills are required
  • The ability to read and understand floor plans, color renderings, electrical schematics, and advanced construction plans or blueprints is preferred
  • Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to instruct on material relevant to technical production is preferred
  • The scope of the job may require working evenings and/or weekends, particularly prior to openings of theatre production presentations
  • A Bachelor's degree in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Theatre is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree with some knowledge of Technical Theatre & carpentry experience will also be considered
