Lush Endowed Chair in Animal Breeding and Genetics

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa seeks applicants for the Lush Endowed Chair in Animal Breeding and Genetics. This position is a 9-month, tenured position at the associate or professor rank with proposed responsibilities 70% research, 25% teaching, and 5% service.  The position includes dedicated annual operating funds. Applicants from academia, industry and government are encouraged to apply.

Candidates should be an international leader in animal breeding and genetics/genomics or a related field. Possible areas of focus include, but not limited to, the use of genetic/genomic, phenomic, and reproductive technologies, epidemiological genetics, and computational methods for precision breeding and farming. All animal species are acceptable areas of focus. Candidates are expected to develop a research program of international stature in Animal Breeding and Genetics and Genomics and are expected to obtain external funding to support their research program. Candidates are expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and graduate student mentoring. Service to the academic mission and profession is expected.

This position requires collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and external constituents. Ample opportunities exist to collaborate with faculty in related disciplines and through participation in interdisciplinary graduate programs such as genetics and genomics, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Key to success will be cultivating relationships with stakeholders that are mutually beneficial for the department, college, and university. Exceptional oral and written communications are essential, as well as a demonstrated ability to broadly communicate science with diverse audiences. A commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the land-grant mission is expected.

Required Qualifications:
A PhD in animal sciences or a broadly related discipline with expertise in animal breeding. Internationally recognized scholarship commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor with tenure and meet the department, college, and university standards for appointment as a tenured professor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in quantitative genetics and/or genomics of food animals.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex research programs and evidence of fiscal/budget management.
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to effectively teach and/or mentor others.
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders to provide solutions to issues through research partnerships.
