The Department of Soil and Water Sciences at the University of Florida has an opening for a full-time postdoctoral associate in the field of coral microbiology.

The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team to work on the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of stony coral tissue loss disease. This project is part of the Advanced Coral Toolkit ( https://reviverestore.org/projects/advanced-coral-toolkit/ ) to develop coral probiotics. This position will be based on the Gainesville campus of the University of Florida and will investigate metagenomes and/or metatranscriptomes associated with both healthy and diseased corals to identify functional genes in coral symbionts (potential probiotic bacterial strains) and pathogens.

The post-doc will work under the direction of Dr. Julie Meyer ( https://soils.ifas.ufl.edu/people/faculty/julie-l-meyer/ ) at the University of Florida Genetics Institute and in collaboration with Dr. Blake Ushijima at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Dr. Valerie Paul at the Smithsonian Marine Station, and Dr. Hong Moulton at Oregon State University. The position is for 18 months, with the possibility of renewal, pending funding.

The position requires a PhD (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Microbiology, Marine Science, Oceanography, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field. Candidates with previous experience with bioinformatics tools (command line, github, Rstudio) and the analysis of metagenomes or metatranscriptomes are preferred. A demonstrated record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals is required. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.
