The University of Florida seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to work with Dr. Arie Havelaar in the area risk assessment of foodborne pathogens in produce chains. The successful applicant will be appointed in the Animal Sciences Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, and will be associated with the Emerging Pathogens Institute and the Food Systems Institute, developed as a Preeminence Initiative at the University of Florida.

This position is funded by the National Institute for Agriculture through a collaborative project involving multidisciplinary collaboration between universities and research institutes across the US. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply expertise in (1) quantitative microbial risk assessment and its applications to vegetable chains in the US, (2) biostatistics and (3) programming (in particular in the statistical language R ), to exciting interdisciplinary problems related to food safety. The research focus will include supporting other project partners in study design, data collection and data analysis, developing and implementing quantitative microbial risk assessment models for pathogenic microorganisms in vegetable food chains in the major growing regions in the US. The ultimate goal is to provide decision support modeling for governments, industry and consumers to improve food safety of produce.

This position will be funded for three years, depending on the availability of funding.

This position is available October 1, 2021 and will be filled as soon thereafter as an acceptable applicant is available. Compensation is commensurate with the education, experience, and qualifications of the selected applicant.

Individuals with a doctoral degree (foreign equivalent acceptable) in biostatistics, epidemiology, food science, engineering or a closely related field are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have excellent academic credentials. Strength in data science and programming skills in the R language is required. Candidates must provide evidence of published work in quality venues. Strong writing and oral communication skills are required, and preference will be given to applicants with additional experience in risk assessment methodology, food safety or infectious diseases epidemiology. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.
