SOA Technical Director

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
The Noorda Center for the Performing Arts, as part of Utah Valley University School of the Arts (SOA), produces, presents, and hosts a wide array of performances and events across multiple venues. As the primary home to the academic performing arts on campus as well as presented and produced works, the Noorda Center is quickly becoming a vital Arts hub for Utah County.

The Technical Director (a full-time exempt position) is responsible for the overall operation and project management of the scene shop including; drafting construction drawings, budgeting, accounting, construction and painting of scenic elements, properties management, and oversight of scene shop employees. This position works closely with directors and designers to reach artistic goals with allotted resources. Once load in begins, this position coordinates all aspects of scenic load in and rigging/overhead preparations with other departments: lighting, sound, projection, etc, for maximum efficiency and safety.

A portion of this role includes serving as lab coordinator for the Stagecraft and Production labs for Theater Department curriculum, as well as supervising and mentoring student employees and designers.

With the Operations Director, the Technical Director will plan long-range strategies for operations. This position will oversee safety standards and directly supervise professional as well as student staff. The Technical Director will attend required rehearsals, tech/dress rehearsals, and production meetings, or delegate an attendee as appropriate. Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Technical Production or related field or substantial experience in the field of theatrical technical production.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge
  • Advanced working knowledge of drafting conventions for theatre
  • Knowledge of current theatrical construction techniques and rigging
  • Knowledge of structural analysis and design
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and automation
  • Knowledge of set and prop design and construction techniques
  • Working knowledge of office software, including Microsoft Office; familiarity and knowledge of common industry-specific software such as CAD programs; experience reading ground plans, light plots and other theatrical specifications

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Advanced skills with regard to construction and theatre technology
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain positive under occasional stressful conditions

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Technical Direction, or closely related field. Extensive (3-5 years) supervisory experience in theater operations, including theater equipment setup, operation, and maintenance.

Pay Range: $49,955 - $55,000
