The Opportunity: 



The Department of Mining Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for an academic faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy (MPEM).  The successful candidate will support the MPEM program in the Department of Mining Engineering and will contribute to providing undergraduate and graduate students with a world-class educational experience while conducting cutting edge research in a wide range of applied fields, and with meaningful service contributions.

The candidate will be an active contributor to several established and highly acclaimed research programs under the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy (KIEM), including the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, the Critical Materials Institute, REMADE, and other externally sponsored projects.  The candidate is expected to also develop independent research projects that complement their specific interests.  The candidate will teach in support of the extractive metallurgy program which may include courses in: pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy, mineral processing, recycling, chemical processing, transport phenomena, chemical thermodynamics and others as required.  The candidate will participate in service contributions both internal and external to the university and will distinguish themselves for their achievements as evaluated by their peers and program constituencies.

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and deliver course materials to undergraduate and graduate students in traditional, hybrid, and online platforms demonstrating teaching excellence and high-impact scholarship. 
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. 
  • Establish and/or maintain a quality publication record. 
  • Develop and maintain strong, visible externally funded research program that will contribute to scholarly publication. 
  • Contribute both institutionally and professionally through active service. 
  • Cultivate and promote an inclusive and diverse Mines community through recruiting, mentorship, collaboration, and service. 
  • Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A Ph.D. in a Mining Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or closely related discipline from an accredited program by the time the appointment begins. 
  • Assistant Professor candidates must possess 0-5 years of experience in academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field. 
  • Associate Professor candidates must possess 5+ years of experience in academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field as well as national distinction and a substantial record in research, teaching and/or service. 
  • Full Professor candidates must possess 10+ years of experience in academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field.  Candidates must have international distinction and a substantial record in research, teaching and/or service as well as an established international reputation. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to safely work safely and unsupervised in a laboratory or industry facility. 
  • Demonstrated track record and/or commitment to diversity, access, and inclusion efforts.
  • Track record of interdisciplinary collaboration across at least two fields.
  • Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Successful record of teaching and research obtained via academic research, college-level teaching and/or industry or national lab experience. 
  • Demonstrated success in securing externally funded grants/contracts for those applying at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. 
  • Demonstrated record of research publications in archival journals and conference proceedings. 
  • Department Description: 

    The Mining Engineering Department currently has 13 tenured/tenure track faculty spanning expertise in mining, mineral processing and extractive metallurgical, underground construction and tunneling, geology and mineral exploration, space mining, and disciplines related to sustainability, occupational safety, data analytics, cultural anthropology, and explosives.  At present, the Department enrollment is among the largest in the U.S., with approximately 90 undergraduates and 55 graduate students.  The Department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Mining Engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mining Engineering, Earth Resources Development and Engineering, and Underground Construction and Tunnel Engineering, as well as an online Professional Master’s degree in Mining Engineering and Management.  The Department also is the home for the Edgar Experimental Mine and the Explosives Research Laboratory located 30 miles west of campus in Idaho Springs, Colorado, and the Earth Mechanics Institute on campus in Golden.  The Energy, Mining and Construction Industry Safety (EMCIS) training and outreach program also resides in the department.  Other resources include state-of-the-art laboratories for mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, equipment for field studies and summer field camp, the Mintec Computer Laboratory for modeling, and a new laboratory for virtual Reality and Visualization.  For more information about the Department of Mining Engineering, visit  https://mining.mines.edu/

    Assistant Professor: $99,197-$103,002
    Associate Professor: $117,$168-$119,254
    Professor: $168,267-$177,981
