Position Summary

Under the direction of the Department Chair and/or Administrative Support Coordinator, the Administrative Support Assistant performs general clerical functions and provides support for the Department. The position is responsible for providing: office support and reception, general information and assistance to students, duplicating materials, coordinating student evaluations and other clerical assistance to one of the largest academic departments on campus. The department is comprised of Communication Studies, Journalism and Film Studies. Serving approximately 1200 FTE, 70 Faculty members- Full time and Temporary, as well as 3.5 staff members.

FLSA: Non-exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $2427.00-$3827.00 per month (10/12 pay plan)

Hiring Range: $2427-$2750 per month

Time Base: Full-Time

Pay Plan: 10/12 - This position is on the 10/12 Pay Plan. The off work month(s) is/are June and July. Benefits and salary are paid over 12 months. In the initial year of starting the 10/12, depending on the timing of the hire, pay may be adjusted in the month(s) off. Pay adjustments may also impact benefits. Position may be converted to a twelve (12) month position upon availability of funds and/or business needs of the department. Months in off-work status may be modified by management at time of hire.

Work Hours: Monday-Friday 8-5:00 pm

Department Information

Programs and courses in Communication Studies focus on understanding the communication process and developing skills to communicate effectively.

The Department offers a wide range of courses in interpersonal, group, and organizational communication, rhetorical theory and criticism, public relations, mass communication and research methodologies. There are over 1800 undergraduate majors and a strong MA program with over 50 students enrolled.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to this classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to operate standard office equipment; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; and typing and keyboard skills.

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through completion of high school program or its equivalent
and some experience in the office environment.

1. Experience providing high level of customer service.
2. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with others from diverse backgrounds
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide information clearly and concisely
4. Strong organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to complete projects and meet deadlines
5. Ability to perform clerical tasks of routine nature.
6. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve a variety of problems
7. Ability to work in a team and collaborative environment.
8. Proficiency in standard office equipment such as PC Computer, Copier, Risograph duplicator, fax machine, multi-use phone system, collator.
9. Fluency in standard software programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
10. Ability to use judgement and discretion in support of department office activities.

    Preferred Qualifications

    11. Knowledge of Common Management System (CMS), Dreamweaver, CDDnet/Dashboard, Mac computer, or Pro Tools.
