Chief Objective of Position
Reporting to the Director for Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (CHECS), the Assistant Director for CHECS (conduct officer) assumes a leadership role for upholding the community standards of the university. Specifically, this administrator adjudicates allegations of conduct violations for the University’s Honor Code and the Student Code of Conduct. The Assistant Director should demonstrate a commitment to understanding and working with diverse student populations and is responsible for recruiting, advising, and training members for the Student Honor Council, articulating the Honor ethos that permeates the campus, and provides educational opportunities for students as members of the larger community. The Assistant Director contributes to the philosophical and practical vision to meet the departmental and University goals of facilitating student success in the context of the university’s core values as derived from the Honor Code. The Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards is a part of the Division of Student Affairs.
Work Tasks
1. Adjudicate alleged violations of the Honor Code and Student
Code of Conduct, including academic integrity.
2. Maintain records and files of disciplinary cases in compliance
with University policies and state/federal laws.
3. Recruit, select, train, and advise members of the Student Honor
Council.
4. Participate and collaboratively work with
the CHECS team to develop and facilitate proactive
educational opportunities to the campus community about the Honor
Code and decision making.
5. Consults regularly with members of the faculty and other
administrators to assist these constituencies in keeping current
regarding expectations and resources that reinforce the community
standards of Christopher Newport University.
6. Collaborates with the Center for Academic Success, Office of
Residence Life, and Office of Counseling Services, and Office of
Student Engagement to develop appropriate outreach and sanctions to
assist students.
7. In addition, works closely with these offices to identify,
assist and advise “at-risk” students.
8. Troubleshoots difficult situations involving students to include
significant interaction with students, parents, and campus and
non-campus constituencies.
9. Assists in developing assessment criteria to determine the
impact of CHECS. Implements formal assessment procedures based
on these criteria.
10. Provides assistance to campus-wide events such as Orientation
and Welcome Week, Move-In, commencement week activities, Admission
Events, and other initiatives sponsored by Office of Student
Activities and/or the University.
11. Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer
service and/or relations within the office/department and with all
constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, and
guests.
12. Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat
everyone with dignity and respect.
13. Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse student communities
and responding to their unique needs.

15. Review and communicate safety issues to assure a safe and

16. This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has
the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to
report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or
who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or
duty.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required
Strong organization and administrative skills. Excellent interpersonal written and oral communication skills. Computer proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software. Skilled in managing and completing multiple tasks with competing deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment. Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze information. Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays and flexible work hours. Ability to work with diverse student populations. Knowledge of student development theory.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) preferred
Working knowledge of documenting incidents in a conduct software (Ex. Maxient).
Required Education
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration or related field at the time of start date.
Preferred Education
Experience Required
Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks with competing deadlines. Experience applying working knowledge of current practices and legal issues as they pertain to student affairs administration (Title IX, Clery Act, FERPA, VAWA, etc.). Experience working on a team.
Experience Preferred
Experience as a hearing officer in a University setting; to include recruiting and training panel members or other University hearing officers. Experience utilizing a student conduct/behavior tracking software. Experience advising a student organization or supervising student employees. Experience designing and implementing educational programs and initiatives.
