The Department of Cinema seeks to fill a tenure-track position
at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the fall of
2022.
Responsibilities include teaching all aspects of motion-picture
production, from conception through post-production, at
introductory through advanced levels. Faculty are expected to be
engaged teachers who maintain their creative practice and actively
participate in departmental and university service.
With an emphasis on active learning, Denison is an undergraduate
institution whose central focus is the education of our
students. We seek an active filmmaker with an exceptional
record of teaching, and the successful candidate must be able to
teach all aspects of film/digital production in a residential
liberal arts environment.
The Department of Cinema is part of the University’s Division of
Fine Arts. As such, our curriculum emphasizes artistry and
conceptual sophistication as much as technical craft. The
department’s overall curriculum integrates film/digital production
and cinema studies, and actively encourages students to draw
connections between the two.
Each course in our core film/digital production sequence
encompasses the entire filmmaking process rather than focusing on a
specific role or phase of motion picture production. This fosters a
mindset whereby students think of their work in terms of
overarching artistic vision rather than technical specialization,
while allowing them to explore specific areas of motion picture
production, which they might pursue further after
graduation.
Applicants’ specific areas of interest and expertise will be
noted; however, it is the individual who is fluent in, and can
teach, all aspects of the generalized filmmaking curriculum
described above who is being sought.
Candidates are required to have by start date
an MFA in Film. Candidates must be able to teach Adobe
Premiere. Experience with 16mm filmmaking and the ability to teach
screenwriting are both a plus, as analog film production and
screenwriting courses are included in our regular
offerings.
To be assured full consideration, candidates should visit
https://employment.denison.edu
and submit: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; graduate school
transcript; samples of work (via links to Vimeo, etc.); sample
course syllabi; and the names and contact information of three
academic references, who the University will contact to submit
letters of recommendation. In your cover letter, please discuss the
specifics of your teaching experience and address your potential to
foster a wide range of perspectives among students, faculty, and
the campus community.
Completed application materials submitted by November 1, 2021
will receive full consideration. Review of application materials
will continue until the position is filled.
