Job Description

Montgomery College (MC) is seeking two well-qualified, innovative, dynamic candidates for the positions of Vice President for STEM and Health Sciences and Vice President for Liberal Arts and Education.

Located in Montgomery County, Maryland—a vibrant, diverse, and economically robust community of more than one million people—adjacent to Washington, D.C., and 30 miles south of Baltimore, the College pursues a student-centered approach, with a heightened intentional focus on equitably enhancing student access, completion, and post-completion success. Montgomery College is governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees appointed by the governor of Maryland. The College is deeply committed to equity and inclusion as a grounding for all its work and serves over 45,000 credit and noncredit students on three campuses, an educational center, and other sites throughout the county.

Diverse in many aspects, the College enrolls students from Montgomery County, the greater Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, and more than 160 countries. MC has more than 480 full-time instructional and counseling faculty members, 850 part-time instructional faculty members, and 330 Workforce Development and Continuing Education faculty members. In total, more than 1,600 full-time and part-time well-qualified and talented faculty members and 1,400 staff members and administrators are dedicated to student success.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs/College Provost, these Vice President roles serve as strategic and innovative academic leaders responsible for the oversight of academic leadership, faculty development, student engagement and success, collaborative academic support services, and financial management and resource development within their respective disciplines. These leadership efforts support the College’s Strategic Plan, as well as the academic master plan and student enrollment plan, both under development.

Each position provides guidance, advice, counsel, and support to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs/College Provost and works collaboratively with academic affairs leadership, deans, chairs, faculty, staff, students, and external constituents in advancing the strategic plan and academic affairs initiatives. Interaction may involve multiple constituencies beyond faculty and staff, such as direct interaction the Board of Trustees, county government, community organizations, College governance councils, the General Counsel, Office of Compliance, Risk, and Ethics, student organizations, collegewide groups and organizations, and external stakeholders and affinity groups for the purposes of advising, collaborating, negotiating, and exchanging information.

Vice President for STEM and Health Sciences
  • Provides operational responsibility for Health Sciences, Health, and Physical Education; Chemical and Biological Sciences; Science, Engineering, and Technology; and Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Expands access to educational programs through the integration of workforce development and community enrichment programming.
  • Leads and guides grants development efforts to enhance instructional resources and professional development opportunities that will improve programs and student learning outcomes.
  • Develops partnerships with Montgomery County Public Schools and four-year institutions to support college and career readiness and student success from K-12 through post-secondary education.
  • Supports innovative dual enrollment and honors program models and represents health sciences and STEM perspectives in College initiatives.
Vice President for Liberal Arts and Education
  • Oversees Education and Social Sciences; English Language for Academic Purposes, Linguistics, and Communication Studies; English and Reading; Visual, Performing, and Media Arts; and Humanities.
  • Supervises the Cultural Arts Center, Parilla Arts Center, and Lab School.
  • Expands access through student-centered scheduling models and innovative term lengths/modalities.
  • Develops partnerships with Montgomery County Public Schools and four-year institutions to support college and career readiness and student success from K-12 through post-secondary education.
  • Supports innovative dual enrollment and honors program models, represents cultural arts and humanities perspectives in College initiatives, and supports civic engagement programming.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development of innovative curricula, foster academic excellence, and support faculty development.
  • Advocate for high-impact educational practices, support student access and completion, and facilitate comprehensive academic support services.
  • Represent discipline areas in academic advising operations to enhance and maximize transferability and partnerships.
  • Manage budgets, seek external funding opportunities, and support innovative initiatives within the appropriate programs.
  • Plan and administer strategic goals, facilitate scheduling and budget management, and conduct needs assessments for program growth and development.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with relevant collective bargaining agreements, including participation in employee and labor relations activities such as collective bargaining negotiations, grievance and discipline hearings, labor and management committees, and governance councils.
Required Qualifications
  • A doctorate or terminal degree in a related discipline; PhD preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible managerial/leadership experience in academic programs and/or service, such as chair, coordinator, dean, director, or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of full-time teaching experience at the post-secondary level in a designated discipline, with preference for teaching in a community college setting.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and a sense of belonging in academic programs, faculty recruitment, and student support services.
  • Knowledge and expertise in a STEM or health science discipline OR liberal arts, humanities, education or social science discipline.
  • Knowledge of structure, policies, trends, and developments in higher education as it relates to community colleges.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders both within and outside the college community.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to guide, advise, counsel, instruct, train, coach and motivate others toward shared goals.
  • Skill in preparing and administering budgets.
  • Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to identify, develop, and implement short/long-term strategic goals and objectives.
  • Ability to develop and implement innovative programs and services to support student success.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with others within and outside of the institution.
  • Eligible applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and not require an employer visa sponsorship.
Hiring Range: $145,612 - $200,230 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $254,848 annually.
