PS Nurse Practitioner
Job Summary
The NP/APRN or Physician Assistant role provides care and treatment to patients in the University of Utah Health Inpatient Geriatric Consult Service and the ambulatory Madsen Geriatric Clinic. This position involves working as part of a team with a geriatrician attending and fellows to care for patients aged 65 years and older.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide state-of-the-art care for older patients in outpatient clinics, inpatient and hospital programs, and long-term care settings.
- Address each of the 4 Geriatric “M's,” guiding our participation in the Age-Friendly Health System initiative.
- Participate in thriving team-based care programs, including:
- Primary care and consult Geriatric ambulatory clinic
- Dementia and other cognitive disorders in the Aging Brain Care program
- Mobility in the Faint and Fall clinic
- In-patient delirium prevention program
- Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP)
- In-patient consultative service
This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Assesses the physical condition of a group of patients by performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
- Provides comprehensive approaches to delirium prevention, detection, and management.
- Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on the patient's condition.
- Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
- Performs selected invasive procedures for therapeutic and/or diagnostic reasons within scope of validated competence.
- Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.
- Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents.
- Participates in quality improvement activities.
- Counsels patients, families, and significant others about health and illness, and promotes health maintenance.
- Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates the care of individuals requiring emergency measures.
- Direct Patient Care:
- Perform geriatric care consults in the hospital and outpatient settings.
- Coordinate geriatric care services for patients and families.
- Perform routine scheduled, urgent, and emergent medical evaluations.
- Order laboratory and diagnostic studies, prescribe medications and treatments.
- Coordinate medical consultations and participate in discharge planning for inpatients with multiple active medical conditions and significant disease burden, in collaboration with the faculty attending physician.
- Work cooperatively with medical students, physician residents, nursing students, nurse practitioner students, and fellows.
- Follow patients as they are transferred throughout the hospital, providing continuity of care to patients, families, and medical teams.
- Teaching Duties:
- Assist with the development and presentation of geriatric educational programs to house staff, faculty, nursing, and other hospital staff.
- Collaborate with clinical departments and clinical support services, such as nursing, in the development of educational programs.
- Serve as a clinical preceptor for APRN/PA students enrolled in degree programs at approved universities/colleges.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
- Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of the specialty area.
- Demonstrated leadership, teaching, research, and communication skills.
- Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.
Preferred
Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
Utah State prescriptive privileges.
Licensure is obtained by completing a Master's degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master's degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Preferences
Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (GNP) certification is strongly preferred.
Previous geriatric or inpatient experience is preferred but not required. Three to five years of experience in outpatient clinics or inpatient and/or long-term care settings is preferred.
