Centre College invites applications for a two-year visiting assistant professor position in Classical Studies beginning August 2025. We seek candidates eager to share their expertise with students at one of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges. The successful candidate will be invested in language pedagogy, able to teach Latin at all levels and elementary Greek, willing to experiment and grow as a teacher, and committed to inclusive teaching. We also welcome applicants with interdisciplinary interests.
The area of specialization is open; however, the ideal candidate would expand our expertise in any number of sub-disciplines within Classical Studies (e.g. history, material culture, classical reception, archaeology, gender studies, race studies, health studies) and be able to teach core courses (Latin at all levels, myth, Greek and Roman history) and creative new courses that contribute to the major and/or interdisciplinary minors (Health Studies, Linguistics, Gender Studies, or Social Justice, e.g.). Faculty typically teach six courses a year, including two to three courses in Latin at various levels, mythology or medical terminology, at least one course in Greek or Roman history or culture, and courses within our general education curriculum.
Consistent with Centre’s institutional priorities in diversity and inclusion, the successful candidate would help meet the needs of Centre’s increasingly diverse student body through course offerings, research mentorship, and as a role model and advisor. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching in a student-centered environment. Special consideration will be given to candidates committed to using/developing inclusive pedagogies, mentoring student research, and supporting students beyond the classroom. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree in Classical Studies or a closely related field by the start of their appointment.
Applicants should submit a detailed letter of application (a 2,500-word-maximum statement describing your teaching, commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, your research, and other relevant activities), a current c.v., one sample syllabus for a potential course you would teach, and three confidential letters of recommendation via Interfolio at the following link: http://apply.interfolio.com/164772
Inquiries may be directed to Dr. Danielle La Londe at danielle.lalonde@centre.edu. Review of applications will begin on March 28.
