Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Research and Scholarly Communication, the Scholarly Communication Strategies Librarian is responsible for leading initiatives at Old Dominion University Libraries related to scholarly communication, open access, scholarly publication, and research impact. The position plays a vital role in advocacy and support for faculty, researchers, and students in navigating the complex landscape of scholarly communication and publishing.
The librarian coordinates with the Libraries’ Digital Archivist to manage content and discoverability of resources in ODU’s Digital Commons repository. The librarian works closely with the department head, Research Data Management Librarian, and research librarians to raise awareness and advocate for equitable and sustainable models of scholarly communication and publishing.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications

Master of Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited institution or international equivalent

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
  1. Demonstrated considerable knowledge of scholarly communication issues in academic research libraries, including digital repositories, open access publishing, research impact metrics, and copyright.
  2. Demonstrated basic commitment to promoting open access to information and scholarly resources.
  3. Demonstrated basic familiarity with concepts and best practices related to scientific data management, including data curation, preservation, and sharing.
  4. Demonstrated considerable ability to communicate with academic audiences on scholarly communication issues including copyright, intellectual property, fair use, open access, research metrics.
  5. Demonstrated considerable ability to collaborate effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff.
  6. Demonstrated considerable analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Considerable relevant professional experience in an academic library
  8. Demonstrated considerable experience providing research support services in an academic or research library setting.
  9. Demonstrated considerable record of success managing complex projects
  10. Demonstrated considerable experience working collaboratively and independently with groups/teams in a complex organization and rapidly changing environment



Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated basic ability to document relevant policies, procedures, and local standards.
  • Demonstrated basic ability to supervise, train, and motivate staff effectively.
  • Additional graduate degree, with research experience
  • Some supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated considerable experience or coursework in scholarly communication, open access publishing, or related areas
  • Demonstrated considerable experience with BePress or another institutional repository/digital publishing system
  • Demonstrated basic experience with planning and delivering instruction or workshops, in-person or online
  • Demonstrated basic experience with creating guides, tutorials, or procedures
