General Description:

The Department of Social Work at Pacific Lutheran University seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor to begin September 1, 2022. Applicants should be able to teach in our generalist social work practice classes, field seminar, introductory courses (HBSE), and electives and/or interdisciplinary courses such as First Year Experience (FYEP) and/or International Honors (IHON) and have the opportunity to be involved in PLU’s robust study away program. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Teach 6 courses per year, including the social work micro/mezzo practice courses, field seminar, introductory social work classes (HBSE), and elective(s) or interdisciplinary programs such as First Year Experience (FYEP) or International Honors (IHON), and study away opportunities. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to serve in the department and contribute to the larger life of the University through advising, committee work, and other service activities. The individual must have a clearly defined scholarship agenda relevant to social work and a commitment to strong teaching. The successful candidate will have an interest in developing an MSW program and the CSWE accrediting process. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • We seek collegial faculty who view themselves foremost as educators and possess a commitment to, and knowledge of, effective teaching strategies. 
  • Familiarity with teaching generalist practice social work courses. 
  • Background working with, teaching, or mentoring diverse groups and/or diverse students and promoting diversity, inclusion, equity, and multicultural competence in the classroom, curriculum, throughout campus, and/or academic division. 
  • Commitment to undergraduate teaching in a university that blends the liberal arts with a generalist-focused professional education in social work. 

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Social Work, DSW, or closely related field. ABD will be considered, however, PhD (DSW) must be in hand by September 1, 2022.
  • MSW from a CSWE accredited program plus two years-post MSW practice experience.
  • For consideration of appointment at the rank of associate professor, the candidate will provide evidence of teaching excellence and a demonstrated concern for improving the quality of their teaching; demonstrated competence in scholarship, along with the potential for continued scholarly achievement; and a substantial and sustained service record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching experience in micro and/or mezzo practice, all will be considered.
  • Understand the impact of race and other forms of diversity on social work practice.
  • Experience working with diverse students.
  • Practice experience in medical social work.
  • Previous undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Previous graduate teaching experience.
  • Professional faculty who view themselves as inclusive educators who are committed to supporting students as they discover their vocation.
  • Knowledge of CSWE accreditation standards.
