William Paterson University invites applications for the full-time, 12-month, live-in professional position of Area Coordinator for Residence Life. There are two (2) open positions.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of Residence life, the Area Coordinator supervises a staff of up to five (5) Graduate Hall Directors and assists in the oversight of approximately 40 – 60 undergraduate staff including Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants and Office Assistants in primarily new student housing.

This position oversees department initiatives that support divisional and University goals related to Student Success, Student Well-Being, Diversity and Leadership and administers a variety departmental functions. The Area Coordinator works extended hours, evening and weekends and has Residence Life on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Student Success

  • Develops student engagement opportunities related to student success including programmatic efforts and virtual learning opportunities.
  • Oversees a collaborative and engaging first year experience.
  • Oversees the management of the Academic Success in Residence Center and collaborates with Academic Support Center to develop initiatives for Academic Success in Residence.
  • Manages the process for addressing Starfish alerts for resident students.
  • Assists with the hiring, training and supervision of Peer Academic Counselors.

Well-Being

  • Plans large-scale social engagement opportunities for students as well as opportunities for student feedback.
  • Researches and implements assessment techniques for student learning and engagement outcomes.
  • Oversees Special Interest Communities that support the interests and needs of resident students.
  • Supports department efforts related to student recruitment and retention, such as participation in Open House, Admitted Student Days and other department and university initiatives.

Diversity

  • Collaborates with Center for Diversity and Inclusion and Counseling, Health and Wellness to plan, develop and implement Courageous Conversations.
  • Helps oversee Special Interest Communities that support the interests and needs of resident students.
  • Collaborates with Student Conduct on the integration of restorative justice principles into our policies and conduct and sanctioning procedures.
  • Represents Residence Life on university celebration committees and oversees the implementation of events and collaborations to support celebration plans.

Leadership

  • Creates and maintains on-going development plans for Residence Assistants and Graduate Hall Directors.
  • Helps coordinate training for Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, Desk Managers, Office Assistants and Graduate Hall Directors.
  • Plans and executes the Annual Staff Recognition and Awards Banquet; coordinates on-going staff recognition initiatives.

Residence Life Administration

  • Directly supervises Graduate Hall Directors and indirectly supervise Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants and Office Assistants.
  • Supports housing operations and facilities management including but not limited to: residence hall opening and closing; summer housing operations and conferences; health & safety inspections; key and roster management.
  • Participates in on-call duty rotation.
  • Facilitates a section of Will. Power. 101/102 or other programming for freshmen as required.
  • Oversees a Residence Life committee and various department projects.
  • Serves as a Hearing Officer in collaboration with Student Conduct.
  • Participates in the selection, training and development of student staff
  • Attends or represents Residence Life and Student Development at staff meetings, orientations, training programs and other university events or functions.
  • Serves on university, divisional and departmental committees as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.

Required qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in student affairs, higher education, counseling, educational leadership or a related field.
  • Three (3) years or more of graduate and/or professional work experience in residence life and/or student development, one (1) year of which will have included supervising staff.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, handling crises and addressing behavioral issues.
  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Valid driver's license required for work related travel.
  • Experience as a hearing officer.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising graduate level employees.
  • Experience using housing and conduct management software.
