The Department of Theater in the Performing Arts Division at Alfred University is seeking applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor of Theatre from candidates with a full background in theatre arts, theater history, criticism, and script analysis, who can teach classes in all these areas with an emphasis on performance courses and directing.

Candidates should display strong scholarship and/or artistic practice with an interest in developing and recruiting for the BA Program in Theatre. Candidates should have demonstrable skills in teaching undergraduates from diverse backgrounds and experiences with a strong interest in promoting works that extend outside the canon. Applicants should also have an interest in working in an interdisciplinary manner, and enjoy the process of making theatre in new and different ways. Candidates with ambitions for and experience in administrative leadership in a growing Performing Arts Division are encouraged to apply.

The teaching responsibilities of 12 credits per semester include courses in script analysis, introduction to the theater, theater history, acting and directing, as well as directing department productions. Professional development will include advancing and growth in creative work and scholarly research. The successful candidate will engage in divisional, university-wide and community service, in advising students and in other administrative duties expected from faculty. Salary is commensurate with rank and experience.

The Performing Arts Division includes four departments: theater, music, dance and performance design and technology housed in beautiful, well equipped facilities.

The Performing Arts Division is an accredited member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The educational programs in performing arts are open to and serve the entire campus community of 1,900 students.

While we recognize that no single candidate will possess all of the following, the ideal candidate will have:
  • MFA or PhD in Theatre or their equivalent.
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching with record of active performance practice.
  • A minimum of three years of previous teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience collaborating with other theatre makers and students as an important part of the production process.
  • A significant interest in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • A broad understanding of theatrical performance and social justice theatre practices
  • Administrative experience in an academic or arts organization
  • Administrative experience in the oversight of a theatre program, such as department chair, is desirable. Experience managing theatre organizations is also considered favorably.
  • Experience with mentoring students for careers in performing arts field
  • A track record of advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice through their teaching and creative practice
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • A process-based theatre practitioner who is open to new ideas and ways of making
  • Knowledge of the current theatre landscape
