Job Description
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of the Disability Resource Center (DRC), the Assistant Director provides needs assessment, interpretation of documentation to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations, counseling, referral, and provision of accommodations in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, to students considered neurodivergent and/or with chronic medical, learning, physical, psychological, and sensory related disabilities. The Assistant Director assumes responsibilities with the Director for the development and implementation of program goals, policies and procedures which affect operations and accessibility of curricular and co-curricular activities for students with disabilities. The Assistant Director assists with the preparation and management of departmental budget(s) and provides direct supervision to the Disability Services Specialist(s).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Interprets comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations, medical
documentation, and psychological evaluations provided by the
appropriate professional to assess and support students’ needs and
determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations in accordance
with federal law.
- Review and coordination of approved housing accommodations
(including Emotional support animals) in collaboration with
Residence Life.
- Provides specialized academic advising, counseling, executive
functioning techniques, transitional training, and other support
services to a caseload of students as assigned by the
Director.
- Utilizes AIM online database to monitor student progress and
adjust accommodations, as necessary.
- Advocates for the appropriate provision of accommodations with
faculty and/or executive administrators within academic affairs and
recommends optimal teaching strategies for students with
disabilities.
- Supervises all aspects of the Disability Resource Center in the
absence of the Director, and assists the Director in the
preparation and management of the departmental budget(s).
- Provides direct supervision to the Disability Services
Specialist(s).
- Recruits, schedules and supervises student assistants working
in the Disability Resource Center.
- Maintains anecdotal records of all student contacts using AIM
online database.
- Mediates disability-related student/faculty grievances.
- Advises department regarding the acquisition of and trains
students in the use of adaptive technology.
- Maintains digital accessibility standards in collaboration with
University technology staff.
- Provides training for faculty, staff, and student employees on
disability matters.
- Prepares and updates informational materials distributed to
faculty, staff, students, and families of students, as instructed
by Director.
- Represents the DRC at informational sessions and events for
prospective students and families regarding disability services at
the University, and participates on committees and other on and off
campus events related to assigned responsibilities.
- Develops, implements and facilitates peer mentoring programs,
and support groups, to assist students with disabilities in
assessment and improvement of their social, self-advocacy and
independent living goals.
- Participates in data collection, program assessment and report
preparation.
- Participates in on-going training through state and national
organizations in the field of post-secondary disability services
and related issues to remain informed of current topics, trends and
resources.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any
time.
- Occasional work on evenings, weekends and holidays may be
required
REQUIRED :
- Master’s degree from accredited college or university in
Counseling, Psychology, Disability Rights, Special Education, or
related field.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the accommodation
process including documentation review, accommodation
guidelines/requirements, and the provision of accommodations for
students with disabilities, including academic and student life
accommodations (e.g. navigating campus, meal plans and dietary
accommodations, campus housing and Emotional Support Animals
(ESA).
- Thorough working knowledge of federal disability laws including
but not limited to: the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section
504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the ADA Amendments Act.
- Proficiency in the use of technology including adaptive
technology, alternative text production, and digital
accessibility.
- Demonstrate understanding, sensitivity and inclusion in diverse
campus environment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently without close supervision, as
well as work collaboratively as a team member.
- Knowledge of federal higher education laws including but not
limited to: Federal Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) and
Title IX of the Education Amendments Act.
- Knowledge of statewide agencies/resources for individuals with
disabilities
- Professional supervision experience preferred; supervision of
student employees acceptable.
