The University is recognized among the country's top-tier research universities, receiving the prestigious Carnegie R1 Classification in February 2025. Furthermore, the University launched "UToledo Reimagined," the institution's 2023-2028 strategic plan focused on ensuring student success from recruitment through graduation; delivering relevant and innovative academic programs; setting the standard for health education and patient care; distinguishing UToledo regionally, nationally, and internationally; fostering a people-centered culture; and positioning UToledo for future success through financial and operational effectiveness.

The new leader will inspire a campus-wide vision for research and innovation while maintaining a strong external focus serving as an ambassador, connector, collaborator, and spokesperson with key funding agencies, private foundations, corporations, and other organizations well-positioned to invest in and support the university's programs, faculty, and students. The VPRSP will work with university leadership to facilitate economic development and support a statewide presence in scholarship, innovation, and entrepreneurship through local and regional industry partners.
