The University of Toledo (UToledo), a student-centered, public metropolitan research university and academic medical center, seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs.

UToledo, located in Toledo, Ohio, serves more than 14,000 students from across the U.S. and nearly 80 countries. UToledo became a member of the state university system in 1967 and merged in July 2006 with the Medical University of Ohio. The University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and has the academic and clinical programs to support significant research growth through proper investment. The University employs more than 5,000 individuals across two campuses. Grounded in student success, UToledo offers an affordable and transformational education experience and is ranked as a top performer in social mobility for its graduates as well as one of the highest in the State of Ohio for graduates' income mobility. UToledo is an energetic and dynamic institution determined to further advance its breadth and depth of research innovation and scholarship.

The University is recognized among the country's top-tier research universities, receiving the prestigious Carnegie R1 Classification in February 2025. Furthermore, the University launched "UToledo Reimagined," the institution's 2023-2028 strategic plan focused on ensuring student success from recruitment through graduation; delivering relevant and innovative academic programs; setting the standard for health education and patient care; distinguishing UToledo regionally, nationally, and internationally; fostering a people-centered culture; and positioning UToledo for future success through financial and operational effectiveness.

Reporting directly to the President and working in close partnership with the Provost and senior leadership, the VPRSP serves as the chief research officer for the University. Providing a broad vision and executive leadership for Research and Sponsored Programs, the VPRSP will lead a $68 M research portfolio including a team of 55 professionals across research and sponsored programs, technology transfer, research compliance, economic development, business incubation and venture development, grant development, the Human Research Protection Program, the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources, and research administration. The new leader will inspire a campus-wide vision for research and innovation while maintaining a strong external focus serving as an ambassador, connector, collaborator, and spokesperson with key funding agencies, private foundations, corporations, and other organizations well-positioned to invest in and support the university's programs, faculty, and students. The VPRSP will work with university leadership to facilitate economic development and support a statewide presence in scholarship, innovation, and entrepreneurship through local and regional industry partners.

UToledo is strategically positioned for research opportunities with the Department of Energy and Department of Defense, with key partnerships at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Oakridge National Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Office of Naval Research, and the NASA Glenn Research Center.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of successful research administration and proven success as a distinguished scholar with a record of considerable competitive extramural funding and will be qualified to hold an appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required, as is a record of accomplishment in building trust and lasting relationships, both internal and external to the University. The next VPRSP will be committed to enhancing UToledo's communication and collaboration across the region, driving business relevant research and start up activity in Northwest Ohio while maintaining the highest standards of research excellence and integrity.
