Lab Technician
Job Summary
The Distel lab, which is just starting at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, is looking for a motivated laboratory technician to join a research team using the zebrafish model to study pediatric cancer. https://uofuhealth.utah.edu/huntsman/labs/distel
We are currently focusing on modeling pediatric bone and soft tissue tumors in zebrafish using genetic as well as xenotransplantation approaches.
We use cutting-edge technologies including optogenetics and photopharmacology, high-content-imaging and confocal microscopy to better understand the earliest stages of tumor development and its progression. We also apply our models for testing small compounds and cellular therapies with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies.
As a member of the Distel lab you will be exposed to a diverse set of techniques in a highly collaborative setting.

Responsibilities
Performs technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. Records observations and measurements and reports results. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. May assist with receipt and inspection of raw materials, and ordering and stocking of materials and equipment.
Essential Functions
- Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.
- Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment.
- Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.
- Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
- Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
- May supervise the care of research animals; perform minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
- May oversee the operations of student course experiments in a
laboratory setting.
This position assists senior laboratory personnel in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and basic theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position may include limited supervision of entry-level laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. If incumbent cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor.
Work is performed in accordance with the supervision of senior laboratory personnel and through periodic conferences with superior.
Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Lab and Office environment.
Often: Exposure to animals, hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences
Previous experience working with zebrafish as model organism is desired and will be beneficial.
Furthermore, the following laboratory techniques will be used, and prior knowledge is beneficial: molecular biology techniques including PCR, cloning, genotyping. In situ hybridization, tissue sectioning and staining. In addition, experience in xenotransplantation is a plus.
