Mission or Goal of Unit: Provide leadership in the areas of rehabilitation psychology and neuropsychology to the Commonwealth of Virginia with the goal of improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by maximizing independence in living skills and employment activities through innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care.

Chief Purpose of this position: To provide outpatient rehabilitation psychology services and contribute to educational and research goals.

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical:
Conduct clinical psychological assessment of adults with traumatic or acquired brain injury, stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, brain tumors, and neurological disorders among other disabling illness or injuries.
Provide evidence-based interventions, including psychoeducation; psychological therapeutic interventions related to adjustment to disability for patients and families or caregivers; behavior management; pain management.
Provide consultation to referral sources and interdisciplinary treatment team; collaboration related to patient's cognitive and behavioral strengths and weaknesses, neurobehavioral needs and issues; improve patient's and family's psychological status to include development and implementation of intervention plans based on interviews, observations, and test findings.
Timely preparation and submission of documentation including reports and progress notes; liaison between psychology staff, referring professionals, patient, and family.

Teaching:

Provide didactic and informal presentations in university, hospital, and community settings, as available.
Assist in the training and evaluation of fellows, housestaff, and students assigned to the rehab team.
Provide oversight and formal supervision (as appropriate) for learners in psychology.

Research:
Participate in research activities of interest to the clinician as well as supporting ongoing and new projects as appropriate in the context of clinical care.

Service:

Serve on university and department committees as requested.
Participate in activities sponsored by advocacy and service organizations for persons with disabilities.
Contribute to the field of Psychology overall through professional organizations.

Other (for instance, administrative duties, etc.):
Contribute to the development of clinical, academic, and research programming to support the evolving excellence of the VCU PM&R rehab psychology service.
Meet the needs of the department as defined by the lead rehab psychology clinician and chair.
Represent the department in official meetings as requested.
Attend scheduled Grand Rounds and staff conferences and lectures upon occasion as requested.
Maintain practice credentials and completion of education as required by hospital, university, and state practice organizations.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Psy.D and licensed or license-eligible to practice psychology in the state of Virginia.
  • Internship/Post-Doc training with relevant experience (rehab, neuro, health psychology).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and time management skills are all essential for success in this role.
  • Must have good academic and clinical credentials.
  • Ability to work well with people in a team environment is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with patients in a medical setting and/or with new injuries/illness would be useful, in additional to solid clinical skills for traditional psychological diagnoses (anxiety, mood, etc.).
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to establish new evidence-based, clinical initiatives.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated leadership skills.
